I think it's that the very minimal level of contact Erskin wants with civilization would make Bel miserably bored and lonely, but the level of engagement Bel wants— having human friends, seeing movies, eating out, keeping up with the news, even getting a job— is eventually going to drive Erskin into an anxious breakdown.

Erskin's not necessarily a loner, he just wants a life of continuous travel that almost no one else of any species wants, or at least not on a permanent basis, so even when he does find companions they peel off eventually. I think he's started to do some careful Not Thinking About It by now, since he really does adore Bel and will be pretty sad when they hit the inevitable fork in the road.

ANYWAY if they found a way where Erskin doesn't have to play dog or human fulltime as he gets dragged through one stressful event after the next, and Bel doesn't have to spend five weeks trotting through cornfields while bored out of his mind, it'd be great.

 

also i am TOTALLY blanking on my next post. ideas?

 

common scene at the aspera-smith residence:

'dear, don't you think you're being a little dramatic?'
'DRAMATIC?' *reels back* 'DRAMATIC!?' *topples off back of couch, foams at mouth* 'MY OWN WOMAN!! BETRAYED!' *pops a fake blood capsule* 'AVENGE ME, MY SONS!!!'

bel: i actually have good points to make and serious, genuinely justice-minded goals to pursue

i think just when you are pushing 80, you have seen a lot of young men in their twenties get fervent about causes and you are a big proponent of 'sit down, have a juice box, and i'll assign you to someone twice your age who can sit on you when you want a drive a tank closer to hit the bad guys with your sword'

 

it's very frustrating to say 'i am young and angry but not stupid' when so many stupid young angry people have said the exact same thing

 

still can't think of where bel would get that education. don't wanna make up some new character right now, im too groggy and braindead for that shit. is there.... a library, a website? a website feels too 'bad supernatural tv show' though.

 

i had like an hour of nap and several hours of being out and about and playing board games! so that was nice.
