i want to do more character profiles, but i'm not very organized, so i think i will just ramble about murphy's parents. Xiaomei Murphy: 49, 5'1', 125 lb. Master of the Shining Dragon kung fu school -- currently her son is her only student, unless she's taken up teaching on Legia's ship while we were gone, but she's trained quite a lot of students over her lifetime and i'm sure many are still out there and remember her reverently. Shining Dragon style is an adaptation of Stone Dragon to unarmed, small weapons, and improvised weapons, although she's also fairly proficient in Stone Dragon style swords and spears. Shining Dragon specializes in delivering concentrated force to a point. She has often joked that she would've stuck with Stone Dragon if she'd known her son would grow up to be so big; she herself chose the small-weapons specialty because she's small and light, and physics says there's only so much you can do with a certain amount of mass, so using a kunai (or a knitting needle, or a kitchen knife, or a broken bottle) allows her to compensate for that. After Murf lost his arm, she began special training with him to adapt the style to turn his prosthetic into an advantage rather than a handicap, hoping to keep him from feeling like he was less than the other kids. it worked, both in psychological and practical terms, and he now uses his prosthetic arm as a weapon with devastating effect. she's glowingly proud of her son, but also a little alarmed at how powerful he's become. she didn't mean to raise an exalt. she just wanted a happy, healthy kid who would maybe take over the school for her when she got old. Brian Boru Murphy, 48, 6'9", 310 lb. (i couldn't find a picture of a guy the right size AND age, so just pretend the guy in this pic is sporting crow's-feet and some gray hairs in the beard). A rancher from a backwater planet who is still kind of stunned that he lucked out and married a lady like Xiaomei. he tends to come across as big dumb muscle, but he's actually quite smart, he's just straightforward and quiet. he's gentle by nature, more at home with animals than people, and even after v-com framed him for murder so they could steal his land and stashed him on a prison planet for 15 years, he's still more sad than angry. he's never hated anyone in his life. he doesn't really understand his son's crusade, and is hoping that when it's over they can all go rebuild somewhere and have a home, hopefully before he's too old to work a ranch.
I believe that was the case, and I think he introduced her to Xiaomei for sharing of recipes and cooking tips. She doesn't cook for all 15-18 thousand people aboard the ship obvs. but she's like... in charge of the cooking for the officers mess and special occasions and suchlike. While they were stationed at Space Siberia the food for everyone was really, really plain and boring and had very little variety because they got supplied with stuff that'd keep for years, in bulk, like... 3600 tons each of Rice and Beans and then a bunch of freeze-dried vegetables and Space SPAM and Space Tabasco and whatever they're growing in the hydroponics sections apart from weed. The supplies and variety are *way* nicer now that you've been to Sigil with a shopping list and an actual budget. Like, actual different flavors and even recognisable styles of cuisine that change from day to day! Although many people may get tired of coconut in everything and curry in most things before Lalun can be convinced that she doesn't have to make up for all the things she didn't put them in while they weren't available to her. Also she has had a Coffee Thing installed that provides Vietnamese iced coffee on tap, with the chicory and the sweetened condensed milk. Her body to tail ratio is about like but she is portly and middle-aged with black hair starting to go iron grey in a long long braid, and about the same skin color and nose shape as Connie from SU. After some quick worldbuilding thinks, I think her people don't really go in for the long-term pair-bond thing, young mothers of the village or neighborhood tend to raise their kids collectively with help from their brothers and no one really knows or cares who the father is, so she doesn't particularly care one way or another about Murf and Jake's relationship being m/m but if it lasts for more than a year or so it will be one more example of Wow, Humans Are Weird for her.
space spam omg D: ok, this first date bit is before they went to sigil, so she hasn't met xiaomei or gone shopping with her own list yet, but the cruise ship was well stocked because of the 'rescue 20k prisoners' plan, so we can say they traded supplies before warping. the ships can't interact while in the warp, right?
Right, they're pretty much sealed up tight. Ships escorting each other like that are close enough that the astropaths could get brief messages back and forth, but it's kind of staticky and a huge effortful headache, the shielding that keeps the warp out of the ship also makes it hard to get psychic messages out into the warp.
