From my Mixed Blessings au. For someone who's never been around kids, I think I did that baby draw really well :D Dirk's always startled that bbies are tiny, John feels the bologna loaf of an infant is not NEARLY covered in enough shiny things, and Dave wants these douchebags to shut up so he can keep sleeping.
In a bit of a swerve from my normal style of drawing, I have ventured into the grim world of Lines With Aliasing, and come up with something I'm fairly pleased with. Important notes: How the heck do people do antialiased colours? Shading??? Cannot draw a steady line to save my life. Looks much better from a distance.
Actually, your lines are quite steady. And shading...well, basically, you squint at stuff. A lot. Pay attention to light sources, and shade with darker/more saturated versions of the main color (and remember reflected light, if you're using a painterly style that would incorporate that). Also, some shadows are sharply delineated while others blend fuzzily into each other. It's a mess - but it's a mostly-understandable mess, it turns out. Like...this piece here shows some sharp shadows on the horse (cast by his neck, by the rider, etc), and softer shading within those broader areas of light and dark (like on his shoulder muscles and neck). For me, personally, I've found that working in general with hard-edged brushes (in digital work) gives me shading I'm happier with - even for areas of ostensibly smooth blending. A good example would be this Absol's mane - even though each chunk of hair transitions smoothly from darker to lighter, that was really all done with hard-edged brushes at medium opacity, layered until I got the smooth effect I wanted. Other people probably feel differently, but that's what works for me.
1. I dunno. there's selection tools and just general things for that. 2. Lots of different ways to shade! Depends a lot on the look you're going for. I tend to do a hard brush, and do cell shading. Often I'll blend teeny bits of that around certain parts to soften it up. Pmuch I just do most of my shading on a multiply layer. 3. One fix for this is literally drawing super huge, then when finished shrink it down. 4. see number 3.
