Look, there's a significant amount of evidence that my species was created to be a race of sex toys by the direct ancestors of the Cereuti but I don't go around telling people from Cereus how impressed I am that they're not absolute fucking assholes.

 

The trick is to have heterogeneous groups. As long as a society is very diverse and no single group has a lot of power compared to the others, there are uneasy moments but things are okay. Once a single group (cultural, ethnic, religious, philosophical) gains ascendance and manages to oppress everyone different, there follows a destructive cycle where the group becomes more and more concerned with its purity and excludes more and more people.

I have yet to meet a sapient species of animal life of which this is not true to some degree.
