Team Fortress 2: The fandom, the tears, the big sweaty men

I noticed a severe lack of TF2 fan town representation. Long ago I was huge into TF2, had my own private server, and was constantly rping in the TF2 rp community. I actually became a BNF due to my character, which still fucking baffles me, whom was one of the first major Tentaspy rp characters that had shit written about him. I commissioned a picture of him from Outfightinglions which was kind of the beginning of the whole 'oh my god so perfect' crap.

It was weird let me tell you. His name was Corin, URL use to be CorinBLU and... I'm having a hell of a time remembering what lions' y-gal is or finding the original link of the commission but anyway.

I was wondering if there are any more old TumblrFort dwellers here! Or just people who love the doofy world of TF2

I haven't played in years but I still keep up with the comics and stuff. I love how a game that's just people blowing each other up and wearing gratuitous amounts of hats has the richest backstory.

ah the days of dicking around on a 24/7 2fort server where nobody even tried to cap the intel. And Fug's Hovel with all the fun maps. And Freak Fortress servers. And Prop Hunt servers. Oh man.

 

I check up on the comics every time one posts, but you know what my fave mode is? Degroot keep, scout with a holy mackrel.

There is something so satisfying about running around slapping people with fish.

oh shit a tf2 thread :U I had kind of been thinking of starting one myself a while ago because PRelations 's icon made me wonder if there were any other tf2 fans on here! I don't actually play tf2 as such (mediocre internet, even worse videogame skills, and i don't have a mouse so I'd need to play with my laptop's trackpad -_-) but a friend made me watch all the Meet The Team shorts a few months ago and from there I kind of binged my way through youtube's SFM offerings, 4 or 5 youtubers' entire collections of tf2 vids, and the ao3 tag. One of my current Life Goals is to obtain a computer setup that actually lets me play the game, lol.

Anyone else follow any youtubers? Uncle Dane and Muselk are my favorites, they have so much fun with it. Also I like watching commentaries or live comms of competitive matches because even though I can't play rn the gameplay interests me.

Also fic. There is some really weird fic out there (tf2 seems to be one of those Weird Porn Fandoms, or at least a higher than usual percentage of the ao3 tag is Weird Porn) but there is also some really good fic that does amazing things with the characters and worldbuilding of the game. I have some recs, if anyone is interested... I am also interested in other people's recs! especially for works on sites other than ao3, because that's the only place I've gone sifting through.

eta: I don't mean to imply that Weird Porn is necessarily bad, but a lot of it is badly written, and it's not generally to my taste either way :P For those who do like it, though, more power to them!

 

Yeah, TF2 fic has a very high bad to good ratio. One of my favorite go-tos is It Could Be Worse but it's been a while since I went hunting through fic. Most of it was posted on tf2chan and only crossposted after the fact (if at all) and for a while there was a weird tf2chan vs tumblr fandom war.

Star and Jerma were the two youtubers I used to watch (Star has some really good How To videos for rocketjumping too if you ever do get a rig that can play) and they've got some pretty good competitive play videos.

CatBountry's fics were always my favorites. Although the TF2 fandom did introduce me to the worst fanfiction in existence, so I'm not sure I can ever forgive it for that.

Not only is it a creepy, messed up fetish fic, it's also incredibly poorly written. The fic has nothing to do with TF2 except the characters' names. Everyone is OOC. The writing is awkward and bland. This fic isn't even funny in a bad way. It's just bad.

The author has written other atrocities, which have also gotten hundreds of kudos. God damn.

 

Well I mean, the fandom's ripe for it. CB still manages to get hits somehow.

Each to their own! I've always found them kind of overhyped, but that might also partly be my Soldier favoritism showing. I'm not fond of how she writes him, and I'll admit that I'm a little bitter about her as a person as well.

Man you know what's weird? I found wachtelspinat originally because of their Intermission stuff but they do some REALLY NICE hat men killing each other.

 

Oh man, TF2! I used to play it a lot (mostly Pyro and Medic cause I can't aim for shit lol) but I haven't played it much in recent years. I still absolutely keep up with the comics, though - I love when a new comic (or video) comes out and all the TF2 fans I follow come out of the woodwork.

My favorite TF2 youtuber has always been STAR_, though Jerma's pretty funny as well.

TF2 absolutely has a higher proportion of Weird Porn than most of the other fandoms I've interacted with. I think it may be because for a long time, the source of the best fic/most active fic was TF2chan? Since then I think mostly the fandom is on Tumblr now, although it does appear that TF2chan is still up. I do like CatBountry's work, or at least I did when I was more active in TF2 fandom, although I'll admit Soldier doesn't get a great treatment in Respawn Of The Dead, which I remember best of her work.

I never did read Breed, but it looks pretty awful. The weirdest I ever read was

Taking advantage of the whole 'respawn' system, Medic killed... either himself or Heavy, can't quite remember which, but it obviously wasn't permanent because respawn, whatever. I think it was himself? Nooot sure. Either way, Medic then cut open the corpse, supposedly for experimentation purposes, and then... fucked the corpse, in the new hole he had cut open in its torso. Yeah. Pretty sure this was a fic on TF2chan.

Honestly that probably wins the prize for weirdest/most fucked up fic I've ever read. Although CatBountry's infamous Surrogate is worth mentioning, too.

As far as relatively non-weird/fucked-up fic goes, I remember I liked the authors Anne the Cat Detective and Hannah. Particularly I liked Hannah's fic series Dog Days Are Over.

Nothing says "I am actually good at video games" like getting caught cheating and then crying about how you have to cheat to win anything. I love this horrible fandom and I love competitive players and I love it when cheaters get banned and cry about it.
