I was talking to my dad about our scars, since we both got a few in the same incident, and remembered a previous discussion with a friend where I'd half-jokingly said that I don't trust people who don't have scars. I take it as a sign that someone's really lived, that they have stories to tell. So, a thread for your scars and their stories!

My favorite is my eyebrow scar, because it's almost unnoticeable except the hair doesn't grow right around it and I get a weird transparent hair that grows next to it. And it has a fun story. When I was a kid my dad had the main family computer in the living room, which we all shared (I had my own in my room that wasn't connected to our slow-as-fuck internet but spent a lot of time on the main one as well). Dad was doing something or other on it when the CD drive started making a funny noise. So he ejects the CD... and it explodes. Fucking shatters. Dad covers his eyes, mom does the same and pulls me down. The room is full of sparkly plastic glitter. Even after vacuuming we kept finding shiny bits of CD everywhere for months. None of us remember actually being injured, but I have my eyebrow scar and my dad pulled a piece of plastic out of nearly the exact same spot just a few year ago. Apparently there had been a tiny, tiny crack near the center of the CD, and the spinning motion made it grow. When he popped the drive it forcefully stopped it, which turned it into shrapnel.

    i've heard of that happening!

i have a scar on my left arm from a fight i got into in high school, where the other guy shoved me through a window. there was a lot of fallout from that fight -- getting suspended for a week was the least of it, tbh -- and it was at that point i realized that even though he had deliberately goaded me into it, i'm the one who threw the first punch, and that's on me.

so when the scar started to fade, i had a tattoo done on top of it so it would keep reminding me. what i do is on me, no matter what other people are doing. i'm the boss of me, and that means it's up to me how i handle provocation.

I've got a big ol roundish scar about the size of a quarter halfway down my left shin.

So way back when I was in like... third grade? I went to the local museum with my family, and after it closed we were playing around in this little courtyard outside. There was a bunch of nice rocks, and some nice stone benches and some trees and whatnot around the courtyard in raised beds with concrete retaining walls. So, because there was a lot of nice trees and bushes and stuff, we decided to play hide and go seek. And because my sister and I were being rambunctious, we decided to play hide and go seek tag. So I hide in the behind a shrub in one of the raised beds, get found, and fucking book it.
And, of course, as I'm running full tilt into the courtyard, my leg happens to fall in between the concrete edge of the bed and one of those aforementioned stone benches.

Yeah, that left a mark. Still has barely faded at all.

I've got a scar on my chin. When I was a kid I got bored and decided to walk across an egress window pit boarded up with plastic nailed together, and it couldn't hold my weight and snapped. I got sliced right open by the edge of the plastic board, and honestly, it could have been a lot worse!

I have possibly the world's dumbest scar. It's between the second and third knuckle (er, counting from the bottom, so it's in the middleish bit) of the middle finger of my right hand. It is almost perfectly round and kinda shiny. I got it by knocking it against the top (metal) edge of a hearth while trying to put more wood on the fire and getting startled by a spark. I made contact with it for about 0.5 seconds, but I had a massive hole/burn there for weeks. It's kind of pretty in a scaly, shiny way.

My dad also has (or used to have, at least) a perfectly # shaped scar on his chin from slamming it onto a metal edge of something when the bus he was on stopped abruptly.

    #also no right hand #but that's a longer story

oh yeah, i've got lots of those from when i worked in a pizza restaurant on the sandwich line. those hot hoagies are made in open ovens, and you're not allowed to use tongs or gloves, you have to put them in and take them out with your bare hands. so someone burned themselves on the edge of the oven or some hot cheese almost every day. not only could you not go put band-aids on it, you couldn't even stop working to run cold water on it. you just had to lump it. it was pretty barbaric tbh. so yeah, i have little shiny patches all over my hands, for which i was paid -- what was the minimum wage in 1991? $5.50 an hour?

I've got three scars and they're all really dumb lol.
One's just above my clavicle and is from once when I was holding my cat and leaning back in a chair, and the chair leaned back a liiiittle too far and tipped over, which startled the cat, who decided to escape over my shoulder and in the process clawed up my neck and gave me one permanent, raised scar.
The second is a raised scar on the front of my right ankle, and is from when I dropped a bike and the pedal caught my leg.
And the third is a barely noticeable shiny bit on the back of my right hand from when I took a bite of a pizza roll fresh out of the oven and some of the lava-hot insides squirted out onto the back of my hand :'D

    Key never make a triangle

I have some long thing scars going down the inside of my leg from falling out of a tree a few years ago, a pair of scars on the back of my wrists from when I got thrown over the handlebars of my bike when I was 12, an ovalish lump scar from getting cut on a broken pool ladder when I was 8 or 9, an upside-down smiley face scar on the inside of my hip from when I had appendicitis and they poked holes in me to drain the infection, a line going from the base of my thumb towards the inside of my palm from getting cut on broken floor tiles as I was scraping them up, a blue dot in the center of my other palm from stabbing myself with a pencil, and many and various other little scars whose origins I either never knew or forgot. The funny thing about the pencil scar is that when I (accidentally, I swear) stabbed myself with the pencil I was just thinking about a scar a friend had on her forehead from stabbing herself with a pencil...

I have a little one over my left eye from being pushed into a car door when I was five, a nickel-sized one on my right knee from falling down the porch steps in the dark on my way to work one morning and ... eh, some others. My favourite is a nearly-invisible one in the middle of my forehead near my hairline where I failed to brake while running through the house and slammed head-first into a corner.

I have a weird little raised line of skin on my hand from falling off my bike when I was six. Getting it is actually one of my earliest memories.
Also I have three small lines on my stomach from a laparoscopy six years ago (they cut holes in you and insert tiny cameras! science!). One of them is directly in my belly button, which like weirdly sealed it off.

  13. Morven

Morven In darkness be the sound and light

Almost all my scars are on my hands, except one on my right foot that's almost vanished; that one's from my desk. I was leaning back on an office chair when the back snapped off and I fell backwards; my legs flew up and my feet contacted the underside of my desk, cutting my foot quite painfully. Never buying that style of chair again!

I have an oval scar on the back of my left index finger, middle joint; it's from a lawnmower. A push cylinder lawnmower, which I had upside down examining just how it cut grass. I was maybe eight? And of course I cut a big chunk of skin off the finger that was closest to the blades because I'm just smart that way.

Then there's just above the nail on my left ring finger; I sanded the top of the nail and the skin there off on a disc sander in shop class. After I did it by mistake, two kids went and did it on purpose; it was that kinda school. I was probably 11 or 12? From the same period, there's a very faint scar on the back of my left hand from a jerk in chemistry class who was heating metal spatulas in the bunsen burner and then burning people with them.

There's a stripe down my knuckles on the left hand from working in a supermarket at 16 or so; the plastic shelf edge price ticket holder scraped me as I was lowering a box.

There's a half moon shaped scar on the thumb side of my right middle finger; that's from a beer bottle cap. The bottle opener was slippery, my hand slipped and the crown cap's sharp edge cut me pretty badly. That one needed stitches. I was stone cold sober at the time too. I missed half of a really good party, too :(

There's a cooking burn scar on the thumb side of my right hand, too.

And then there are healed cat scratches absolutely everywhere.

I have one on my right temple from when I got in a fight with a Ford Escort (I won; I was repairable and it wasn't). My head split on the windshield, down to the temporal nerve, which was exposed but not damaged. A plastic surgeon was on call in the ER, though! So now, 13 years later, it's mostly invisible even when I don't have my glasses on.

I've got a little crescent scar on my left hand from a cheese slicer, and a couple shiny patches on my knees from skinning them, and a huge lump of scar tissue/nerve damage from the same accident.

I've also got burn scars on the inside of my left arm from a malfunctioning laptop fan, and a fairly bad one on the back of my right ankle that's from my utter and longstanding inability to not cut myself shaving.

Also one on my right hand that I've had for 17 years and have no idea how I acquired.

I've got a ton of tiny burn scars from working in a bakery! Sort of the same story as jacktrash, though ironically despite the bakery being in a Walmart we worked under much less barbaric conditions (guess things have gotten a little better after all XD). We were required to use gloves, but because I'm kind of a klutz and the oven was right up against the service counter with only enough room for a single person to pass through, I'd hold the tray too close to my chest and burn myself on my upper arms. Had a neat stripe effect going on but alas, it's faded. Maybe I'll get it redone with tattoos or professional scarification someday, because seriously, it was neat.

I also have two tiny scars on my left leg from the times I had MRSA, which apparently actually weakened in the muscles in that leg leading me to fall in a ballet class I'd been taking with a friend years after the fact, and a small scar on my right knee from when I wiped out on my cousin's bicycle in high school. It was a pretty bad fall; the scar stayed this weird purple for nearly two years afterwards, until my dad did a little at-home surgery and pulled some tiny bits of gravel out of it. Good times. XD

I used to have a scar near my eye, but it´s gone. Well, my mom claimed to be able to see it but I can´t. I had some sort of infection or something in one eye when I was little, but dont remember what it was, just vague hospital impressions. I also have two x scars on my lip where I slipped in the bath and split it. Sometimes I stick rhinestones on those. Mostly they just make it hard to apply lipstick neatly.

I've got five scars, in order of getting them:

A vertical scar on my forehead above my left eye. I got that one when I was three-ish, I think (I do not remember getting it and my memory goes back to mid-kindergarten, so I was 4 1/2 at the very most) - I ran into a door. It was clamped.

A scar on my left knee - in kindergarten and elementary school, I used to stumble over my feet all the damn fucking time. My knees were always scabbed. That's when I stopped wearing the wool tights my mom kept buying for me (they itched like a motherfucker and their threads used to tangle in the wound and pulling them back out was nasty). I think that stopped when I stopped wearing laced shoes. Slipons and velcro ftw. (I still stumble over bumps at times because my gait tends to be low and fast, but I can usually catch myself, but back then I used to step on my shoelaces.)

A scar in the crook of my right arm, from when I used to donate blood plasma, that's where they put in the canula.

A scar through my right eyebrow - that's where my piercing was before it ripped out ::( (probably due to me overtaxing my body in that regard by getting four earlobe piercings done half a year later in midwinter, and them getting infected. The skin strip across the piercing just gradually became thinner and thinner and then ripped through. I loved that piercing, and it was 80 euros down the drain ==_==)

A larger scar on my left elbow. I was dragging my feet over the grass because pleasant feeling, and then stumbled over the stone border. Now the problem was, my hands were full, and I carried a cup I was quite fond of (and had just located again), so I could not fall back on my Judo training and just roll - so I braked with my elbow. That one still itches at times.

Fish butt Everything is coming together, slowly but surely.

Three main scars: one almost invisible right in the middle above my lip, caused from a fall when I was really small (what do you call a baby that can walk, a toddler?). My grandmother was walking with me and mama tells me she fell down, pulling me with her and having me fall flat on my face. Not really much else to tell in that story as I can't remember anything of that, but I do have a straight line in the middle of my face where my lip almost split. It was a lot more visible years ago than it is now, but you can still kinda see it if you look for it.

Second one on my index finger. I used to be mildly allergic to insect bites because of a rather disgusting incident with the tsumu fly in Nigeria.

lay their eggs in clean and warm laundry. I got some in my underwear and the eggs grew into my skin. Had to wait for the eggs to hatch. Wasn't pretty.

Not really much of a story there except the damn thing grew to be about as big as an egg and I could hardly move my finger. Lots of hot compresses and eventually it burst and there was a lot of pus. Now I have a very clear scar on ky finger because of that.

Third one on my knee. Bullying incident in Colombia where the kids beat me down to the ground and I skidded over the pavement into the grass. I was wearing long pants so even though my knee hurt like hell I tried to shrug it off and just went about the rest of the day. When I came home my pants were covered in blood on the inside. I still didn't really do anything against it, I cleaned it and I don't think I even had a bandage for it!! I was reallt stupid at the time. Next day gym class and everyone saw my bloody knee and kind of left me alone. The skin never really healed properly and for the longest time it was a purplish scar. Now it's white but the skin is still pretty delicate there.

None of my scars have interesting stories attached. There're plenty of times I've injured myself in mildly hilarious ways, but I don't tend to scar. Which is terrible, because scars are lovely.

I've got... weird puffy thumbprint-sized scar on my left forearm where I was trying to take a tray of cookies out the oven and my brother distracted me, neat little line scar between left thumb and left forefinger where I was trying to carve a pumpkin and my brother distracted me (you may be noticing a pattern here), and a little round Mystery Scar on my right shoulder.
I used to have one on my right knee (fell over when I was a kid) but I don't think it's noticable any more. I don't know, it might be, I don't look at my knees very often.

Also all the self-inflicted ones but I don't think this is the thread for that.

I have three or so scars.

I have one on my forehead from when I fell over the front of my bike flat on my face. They had to glue it back together.

I have one on my hand from that time I accidentally scratched my hand on the door of a friend of mine. It was dark, so I didn't even realise I'd done it until I was already home :P

And then a faint scar that's only visible when I really look for it and turn my arm just so, from when my cat accidentally scratched me.
