Yup! And Carcer's whole thing is that he constantly acts like he's falsely accused and unfairly pursued by a cop who's blowing minor crimes out of proportion.
It's genetic. Or a curse on the bloodline. And let's be real, there's no way Madame didn't notice his opinions on this, and she probably laughed her ass off when he got Wuffles.

It really was difficult for me to pick the Watch on the poll, bc - The Truth is one of my favorites and I have it as an audiobook so I've listened to it a lot; Hogfather has a special place in my heart because I was first motivated to read Discworld by watching the movie and also as a wee bab I read a lot of mediocre Susan/Teatime; and the witches are SO GOOD and I love moist SO MUCH and

but every time I read literally any conversation between Vimes and Vetinari I am in stitches. so. (also I love angua)

I really wish I could get more audiobooks, but too many of them were read by Nigel Planer (whose voice I irrationally detest) rather than Stephen Briggs (who cemented my headcanon voices for like half the characters in the damn series.)

I.. how am I supposed to pick one of those themes.

My favorite moment was when Vimes arrested an entire army in Jingo, but the witches are SO GOOD. aughhh.

Edit: I picked the witches. They don't always get the best books, but Granny Weatherwax is an amazing character, and she's counterbalanced perfectly by Nanny Ogg. One of Terry's favorite themes is the power and complexities of belief, and it shines through the best in his witches books.

I, uh. pirated the audiobooks of the entire series because i own all the books hard copy but sometimes i want to listen to something while playing mindless browser games. I have issues with both of them, honestly, though Nigel Planer gets most of my enmity for randomly inserting Dragon King of Arms into a scene in Feet of Clay which he is explicitly not present in. I wish they'd gotten the lady who read Wyrd Sisters to read more of the Witches books, personally.

I maintain that the bit where she fleeces the card sharks in Witches Abroad is one of the greatest sequences in the history of literature.

I love Night Watch, but I feel like it's a Sam Vimes book rather than a Watch book. On the other hand, The Fifth Elephant has prrrobably the best of Sybil and also has a very good showing for Cheery (honestly I'm kinda lukewarm on Angua and Carrot, romance drama and werewolf drama are things I don't usually go for). They way that the Fifth Elephant expands on the dwarf cultures and myths is fantastic, and it's a shame that Trolls don't really get their full due until Thud. I also love Feet of Clay, and the collective Witches/Tiffany collection, and basically all the books.

Thud! is probably my favorite Watch book, even though Night Watch is my favorite book overall. You're right about it feeling more like a Vimes book than a Watch book (or at least, our Watch) though.

I've gotten one of my coworkers to finally start reading her copy of Guards! Guards!, and while I'm glad she's as in love with it as I am, I am slightly concerned that her #literallyme character is Nobby.

I'm listening to Mark Reads Discworld and he's up to Maskerade and while I'd noticed the foreshadowing before, it only just really sunk in that
all the rumors the chorus girls are spreading about the ghost are a) 100% correct and b) disregarded because of sexist stereotypes about them being silly, shallow, hysterical girls.
And how well that fits in with all the other themes in the book of stereotyping and casual cruelty, like the fatphobia against Agnes and the ableism against Walter. Everybody goes "well they're just..." and dismisses them.

So I'm rereading Jingo, as y'do, and I finally got one of the jokes.

And I just got that, if you're singing, pheasant pluckers would very easily turn into pleasant fuckers.

Yes. I believe it was actually a reference to a pre-existing dirty tongue twister. "I'm not the pheasant plucker, I'm the pheasant plucker's mate, I'm only plucking pheasants 'cause the pheasant plucker's late..."

Yeah, it's used as diction warm-ups in theater. I am a mother pheasant plucker, I pluck mother pheasant, I am THE most PLEASANT plucker to ever PLUCK a mother pheasant. Or something like that. That's why I recognized it.

For her birthday, I got my sister The Compleat Discworld Atlas.

Sister: Oh! This is great! I always wished the books had maps. Especially the books like Jingo or Witches Abroad; I can see why Night Watch wouldn't have a map.
Me: ... Night Watch has a map. Night Watch is the only one that has a map. How did you manage to pick the only one that has a map?
Sister: ... well. Raising Steam has a map too.

    She did get me there.

  20. I'm so happy to see more discworld stuff showing up, I knew the books were popular but like...I got into them when I was in middle school because my dad lent me Good Omens and I was like yes this is good but is there anything sort of like it that I can also read; so he lent me wyrd sisters and then I slowly went through his entire book collection. So they're both very good books and also a point of nostalgia for me since they're one of the few things me and my dad can talk about for hours without it being weird. I still haven't covered all the books, but I finished up the witches and watch series. So I voted watch because I love Carrot, honestly. (Granny Weatherwax is a really close second though.)
