*BUSTS INTO THREAD TO TALK ABOUT ROTE* Hi guys! Let me tell you about Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderings. >:D It is, by far, my favorite book series right now. Like, I'm getting giddy just thinking about it. The series has quite a few books, so if you're one of those people who just can't get enough of a good story then this is the series for you. Also books are still coming out, so there's an active "OMG WHAT WILL HAPPEN???" thing too, which I really like. They all follow an extended storyline, so I'd suggest starting at the beginning with Assassin's Apprentice, but I myself read them completely out of order and still fell madly in love so meh. And can I just say; realistic deceptions of abusive relationships, healthy queer relationships, nonbinary gender character, all the amazing women, DRAGONS, non-sexual romantic love, PIRATES, political intrigue, huge range of skin tones, ages, and body types, ARGH I cannot even. Highly recommended.
HELLO THREADBUSTER. I've been following your tag on tumblr, and I have to pick up this series, based on what you've said about it. :D Adding Assassin's Apprentice to the library hold list. (ETA: Also, you should suggest it when we get to the next book poll!)
I'm teaching and serving as Secretary General for a meatspace book club right now, but I'd be in as well! (Providing I have spare funds for more books who am I kidding I spend 85% of my disposable income on books and enough spare time to get another book read)
i have a feeling that bookclub is likely to last a very, very, very long long long time. just look at all the books that people are adding!
oh my goodness i can't think of why i didn't think of it but man if you like all this you might like the inda books. epic worldbuilding, pirates, battles, bamf ladies of all sorts (like some are literally kickass, the main character comes from a very military society, but there are also some who are political bamfs), the main character is almost certainly autistic although their society hasn't got a word for it, there's character sexualities ranging from ace to straight to gay and everywhere in between, and just, man. from your description i need to pick up some robin hobb because i loved those books so much.
I, for one, am totally shocked and blown away by this entirely unexpected development. Also, while we're reccing books for the not-so-immediate future, I'd like to toss Garth Nix's Old Kingdom/Abhorsen series into the hat. Also anything by Diana Wynne Jones ever, but especially Fire and Hemlock, Conrad's Fate, Deep Secret (which takes place at a con!), Hexwood and The Merlin Conspiracy. A lot of her books feature abusive/neglectful parents and family, so warning for potentially triggery stuff there, but also potentially up this forum's alley.
The longer this list gets, the more grateful I am that I have a couple of Barnes & Noble gift certificates from the last few years floating around.
... oh shit, there are Diana Wynne Jones books I haven't read. I was reading them before Wikipedia, so I just grabbed everything at the library, but it looks like there are LOTS MORE. :D And yesss, I just reread the Old Kingdom series, it remains awesome.
Maaan. So many good things. I really wish we could make the polls bigger, I'm sure the next month'll see so many more additions. I'm trying not to talk about all the other ones I'd like to recommend because of that. Well, mostly. The two that I most like might be rough for some folks, too (The Windup Girl and The Magicians), so bleh on that part. There's just so much good stuff out there to read, not enough time to read it all. Alas! Alack!
*shows up late to thread with starbucks* I am SO here for a book club. In the future, I may have recs, but right now what I want is to read something other people recommend.
Because it's on the last page now and this is the more active thread, here's the link to the poll about which books to read this month: https://kintsugi.seebs.net/threads/what-books-should-bookclub-read-first.184/ EDIT: The link, I mean. The link to the poll is on the last page of THIS thread, so if someone missed it and just skipped to the new page, they'd never see it. The Poll is still on the front page, I think, and if not, well... this works to bump it, too, I suppose.
*pokes head in* While I don't know if it would be good for large group reading, I thoroughly recommend hal duncan's Vellum & Ink (two different books). There's some great alternate universe, vast conspiracy, angels (kind of)... (While I'm talking about alternate universes, check out Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber) (And while I'm talking about sci fi authors whose styles vaguely remind me of heinlein... Lady Slings the Booze from Spider Robinson. Puns and time travellers!) And Riddle of Stars by Patricia A. McKillip. and, fuck this is the last one, promise, the Inda series from Sherwood Smith
Ooooh, I've been meaning to finish Riddle of Stars for ages. And Amber is always fun. Going to have to look into the others; yay, new books!
