oh my god i love you, i love everything about your space opera world, this is fantastic.

imagining a staredown between hux and jake. beginning with, "excuse me, are you my clone?" and ending with hux in the medbay getting eyedrops, commanding phasma "i don't care how much alcohol is involved, do not let me get into a staring contest with someone with cybernetic eyes."*

meanwhile jake, on the verge of alcohol poisoning, is explaining very slowly and with careful enunciation to murphy that he dreamed he won a staring contest with a mirror, while murphy very gently pries the bottle from his hand.

the finalizer and the teachable moment are casting a vast doomy double shadow on the planet below. captain myrrshan and lieutenant mitaka are sipping tea in the finalizer officer's lounge (because the teachable's officer's lounge has been turned into a paintball course this week). "well, that's one way to handle matters of spacelane precedence."

... i'm sorry, i'm not trying to turn this into a DTD thread. it's just. we have a star destroyer too. and it's a fucking circus. the comedy writes itself.

*jake's eyes aren't cybernetic, they're magic, but there's no warp effects in star wars verse so shoosh

Philosophy question! Can move if this is a bad place.

But like... is there anything actually intrinsically wrong with the Sith Code? I am considering it at the moment, and finding it very appealing philosophically.

Like... the implementation, unambiguously evil. All canonical Sith I'm aware of are evil mass-murderers and totally not to emulate.

But it seems to me that if they wanted an unambiguously evil moral code, they could do a lot worse. PUA/narcissist philosophy comes to mind - "My personal emotions define reality. It is justified for me to do anything in order to feel good, or to stop feeling bad, no matter what effect it has on the world around me. My emotions define truth; I will not be convinced by objective fact or the emotions of others, because my feelings are more important."

This sounds a lot more like an activist credo that got really horrifically implemented. To paraphrase:
Just because things look okay, doesn't mean they are. The status quo does not make things better; only caring creates positive change.
By caring about my cause, I gain the strength to advocate for it.
By advocating, I make my cause stronger.
Eventually, we win. And things get better.

Holy shit. There's times when I think the Anakin dub is the actual actor.

My favorite part is how they've put a fair bit of effort into making everyone sound like their actual actors... and then you get to Palpatine. Or rather "Speaker D"/"the D." :::PPP

My other favorite part is whenever the translator clearly had no idea what the hell the line was and just made something up, so you get something almost coherent but totally unrelated. Like "Activate ray shields!" being replaced with "I should really feeds you all dog."

I DIDN'T EXPECT YODA TO BE AN OLD WOMAN

eta At least a few of the completely offkilter lines conveniently lipsync very well, which is hilarious.

Agreed, the Sith Code is not intrinsically evil and I'm fairly certain that when the Sith Order was first organized it wasn't evil.

The Empire and the Sith are two separate entities, especially since in Movie Time I'm pretty sure True Sith (the species) isn't even around anymore? Especially given how anti-alien the Empire is.

I *think* the Sith Order started as a revolt/uprising/etc but rather than reform the Empire, they just became the new power, putting the Dark Council of the Sith over the Empire.

I'm not sure if the Emperor is a Sith so much as he is the head of the Sith Empire and he uses the Dark Side and 1+1 = sandwich?

I don't think ALL the Sith are evil? There's several that have had good motivation but, yannow, poor implementation (looking at you, Malgus) and others that started light/neutral, ended up on the dark side due to circumstance and converted to the light (Visas Marr)

is there a list of force abilities anywhere? while writing my fic i keep running up against the problem of not knowing what's reasonable for kylo or snoke to be able to do.

@jacktrash afaik there's not necessarily a set list of powers that every bit of star wars fiction complies to. it's just kind of general. there's a list of powers from a wide variety of sources on wookiepedia (fake edit: ninja'd before i could link), but those are just powers that have been demonstrated. you could potentially write them as having whatever power you wanted as long as you described it in a way that conveys vague spirituality is involved.

I went through Wookieepedia's list of Force powers for my own amusement a while back. Some of them are hilariously bullshit. There was some RPG thing that said you could walk through walls with the Force, for instance. Oh, and "Force Scream," a.k.a. "someone please ban Kylo Ren from editing the wiki, because screaming in melodramatic distress while being a Sith Lord is not a power."
