I can't believe yesterday I chose back pain as a random example of something that could be caused by rowing and today I had to leave work early because of incapacitating back pain. I didn't even go rowing :(
@jacktrash I've been idly pondering getting a rowing machine myself, but the prices are so variable that I find myself going "??? is x feature actually worth an extra $100?" Which one did you get?
http://www.target.com/p/stamina-1201-orbital-rowing-machine/-/A-48630478#prodSlot=_1_2 i p much just got the cheapest one i could get delivered. the counter broke off while we were putting it together, but other than that, it works just fine. nice and smooth. uses pneumatic pistons for resistance, and you change difficulty settings by shortening the oar arms (to change the torque mechanically) so that might be annoying if you're tall. i'm not tall so that's fine. and i don't use the counter, i just listen to music and zone out, so i don't mind that the attachment was flimsy. i'm not sure what features you'd want; i just wanted a cardio stim i can do sitting down, and it works quite nicely for that. smooth and silent.
I think the main features I'd want would be a timer and something that calculates splits, just so that I could focus on keeping a steady pace. I still don't really understand how they can range in price from ~$500 to ~$1300. Pity there doesn't seem to be a shop nearby where I can actually test the differences.
Regarding price: I once worked in a custom motorcycle shop machining custom wheels and stuff. One of the painters there told me he used to work painting sporting clays (for skeet shooting [poor li'l skeet]). The clays would all come out of the same mold, same oven etc., and he'd paint them three different colors and put them in three different boxes with three different prices. Customers would come looking for premium clays, he'd be out and offer the medium ones saying they're basically the same thing. Customers would say "no, I'll wait for the premium ones, they just fly better." I wonder how a mass produced bicycle can be worth $3000.
tempting as it is to have a thing 3d printed by an expert !!! the sad fact is i'll never use the dang thing so it'd be a waste of time and resources. when i count i get tired super fast, but when i just space out and don't worry about how much i'm doing, i do like 3x as much before i get tired. it's a weird little autistic miracle. :D
Is that an autistic thing? I thought it was pretty typical. It's part of why I like to listen to audiobooks while working out; keeps me from counting and thus getting tired.
One of my GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS recently has been walking on the treadmill for 15 minutes every morning, alternating one minute of brisk walking with one minute of brisker walking. That's sort of what exercise looks to me right now! But, like, I used to do no exercise at all, so it's an Improvement. I like to think of it as my tax for not going outside ever, because if I went outside I'd probably do at least fifteen minutes of walking around, so if I'm not going to go outside I should probably try and make that time up on the treadmill. As part of my Specific Working Out Routine I put on the Protomen's first album, and, like, because I only listen to it while exercising it's an effective way to try and get my butt moving when I'm not really feeling it. (Thanks, Pavlov.)
I just had the BEST RUN. I was expecting it to suck. It was pretty hot and sunny today and I was not looking forward to hauling myself through 11 miles. But when I left, it was already starting to cool off. It was still light out, so I turned off on the road that leads off into the woods instead of sticking to the lit sidewalks. I'd only ever gone a couple miles that way - I always turned around when I hit the T intersection. But I had 9 miles to go and the sun was still up when I got to the T, so I decided to turn right and see where the road went. It was beautiful. Woods and fields that used to be farmland and the occasional big house and hardly any cars on the road. Everything was that golden color that you get when the sun is low in the sky. The running felt effortless. The sore place on my foot that was bothering me this week didn't even twinge. I got about 5.5 miles in and was getting ready to turn around when I saw a sign that told me where I was and I realized that I could turn the run into a loop, and not only that, I would hit a place with sidewalks and streetlights just as the sun was going down. Now I'm home and I have ice water and leftovers to make a chicken burrito with and limeade and rum for later. I'm tired, but I feel great. Sometimes I have bad runs and I wonder why I put myself through all this...and then there are nights like tonight. *flops down in the computer chair radiating supreme contentment*
i cranked up some major lazer and danced to an entire song without stopping this is a serious accomplishment at my stage of falling-apart-ness
I got a new bike, and I don't have to fight this one to make it move! the bike place I went to was really nice, and even did a bike for my price range when i told them it. I'll message anyone who wants to know more about them if they're interested, but they're a local mn company and i don't want it to be too public. [Edit:] Also, i'm going to make use of the bike trails near my house now!
Last night I took my new bike for its first ride other than home from the store. I went all the way around the lake, for about 2.2 miles! My back is killing me today but that's not really any different than usual.
I am chubby guy on a bike without a dog. Mostly i just think it would be fun to have people to bike with, though that might be unrealistic, idk how close to minneapolis people live. I'm in the suburbs about 30 minutes outside of minneapolis.
