I'm talking about private sector not government. Things like banks ect. They have legal limits that the government will allow them to encrypt data, which in the states is due to time of transfers with the treasury department. I'm wanting to know if there's going to be an attempt at requesting lighter encryption on financial records the same way China tried to do to Hong Kong when they reclaimed ownership, but in reverse.
I got my petition email finally, and the number of signatures is over 425k. Edit, a couple of minutes later: ...now over 430k.
One thing to note is that this in itself does not move the UK out of the EU. This was purely a vote to judge public opinion. The winners can now claim a popular mandate to take the UK out of the EU, but it actually hasn't been done yet.
@alchemicalheart - I like Vox's coverage on the issue, it got me up to speed on the stuff I'd missed. This article in particular answers some common questions. (nb: I'm kind of distant from this issue, being in the Commonwealth but not a part of the UK or Europe. If Vox got everything wrong and I'm linking to awful sources, I'm sorry! They seem to check out okay from the poking I did at them but I'm always nervous I'm going to link people to something bad hahaaaa ._.)

Wry across-the-pond humor aside, damn. That's... I'm not even sure what the implications of this are for the future but it doesn't bode well. I was realllly hoping that if this hyper-nationalistic 'fuck being a team player, we're going to manage our country OURSELVES and inside of fences built north of mexico OUR OWN BORDERS' trait was going to exist at all, it wasn't going to spread far outside of the U.S. Sorry about the long-running cultural exchange : /
I'm getting really bored of seeing people repeating the 'okay everyone chill out and move on what's done is done stop making angry status updates' line ad nauseum. (Not people here obviously). People have the right to express their anger and fear without being condescended to by people trotting out the 'keep calm and carry on' shtick and trying to shut down their arguments. It's only been a day. It's not as if this is all old news yet. And there's still plenty to fight for.

I've got to say, the Canada law about 'you can't move here if you have a health problem' is, wow. I have never seen that before in all my perusal of various immigration laws (though I think I've heard that Australia has it? but I can hardly move there), and I hope it doesn't catch on.

I can't see this as a huge breaking news segment, when it's effectively just "David Lammy said a thing". But I guess it's a good thing than an MP brought up the fact that parliament can just ignore the vote? I mean, European relations have already taken the fucking hit, but I feel like that should be quickly forgotten. Europeans don't hold grudges. (Lol) Also that petition is up to 2.1m signatures and still climbing.

Someone on FB shared an album of screenshots from Twitter, various newspapers, etc, detailing the hateful behaviour of some leavers towards anyone they perceive as foreign-born in the aftermath of the result. It currently has 88 images. My Spanish friend reposted it with the comment, 'is this what I need to be prepared for?' And my heart fucking broke. My boyfriend and I just sat in the dark for an hour in our bedroom talking about how scared we are.
the best thing that can happen is a re-vote, but even that isn't going to look good, since ukip is still going to claim victory. does anyone know how likely it is that parliament will ignore the referendum? I know they can, and maybe they should, but that'll just leave the issue to fester.
This definitely goes into the category of "Why have representative democracy, not direct democracy." But another thing it shows is that there's a huge amount of people who do not feel represented in power and who are angry about the state of the world. Please let a good political party fill that gap, not UKIP and their tagalongs.
