that is actually kind of why Tai Chi interests me more--the martial arts aspect. I really REALLY want to learn jiu jitsu or something but. chronic fatigue. jiu jitsu is probably much too much at this point.

Ehehehe jiu jitsu is The Worst in His Opinion, because it is so focused on taking your opponent to the ground and grappling.

    Paraphrased Grumping:
"That's how you get dead. If you're on the ground, you're fucked because you can't get away. Self defense is 'break something important and then run away and call the cops while they scream about their crushed ankle.'"

He does/taught "combat hapkido", which is based around that exact principle. It's a very "mean" style because basically everything is "lock this joint and then make it bend the wrong way" with little room to pull your punches.

yeah someone recommended it to me on my blog so I was like *shrug* sure why not
there are almost certainly better ones out there but I wouldn't know them so
combat hapkido sounds interesting though. maybe I will attempt learning this.
....someday. sometime. when exercise doesn't make me die of exhaustion. maybe. hopefully.

Aikido is similar, less intense and easier to find a teacher. He's +4yrs out of practice because he can't find anywhere or anyone to spar with (except MMA guys and again, snob)

for actual Getting In Fights self defense, i'd want to learn krav maga. for health and strength and mental balance, tai chi or the more ceremonial forms of kung fu (the sword dancing type stuff) would be my pick.

edit: this is from someone who studied tae kwon do as a kid and got in lots of fights up until his mid 20's -- i never really used any of those moves or katas in real fights. just the very basics of a solid stance, how to hit for reals, and the fact that you can block/redirect rather than just dodge or take the hit. the things that actually saved my ass were like -- if you go for someone's face they hesitate/flinch, if you keep knocking them down the fight eventually goes out of them even if you don't really hurt them, and if you absolutely have to hurt them, the best weapons are a) the wall and b) the floor, they will do more damage than any part of your body.

so i'm a smidge skeptical of martial arts as self defense in general, and find the military forms more practical. thus krav maga, or the american special forces skill set which is similar.

but tai chi is like less-stretchy yoga, in terms of an exercise routine -- zero-impact, easy on your joints and your blood pressure. as i get farther into my 40's i find i can no longer just wail away on the weight machines, so tai chi is looking more and more appealing.

Systema is really great for this! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systema) I used to train in this as one of my friends teaches this together with her fiancé. The training is all about slow movements and teaching you how to disrupt your attackers body. I loved it, but it was impractical for me to continue to train :( And there's no Systema group close to my house now unfortunately.

Man, my treadmill broke. :( This is really super disappointing to me because like... I have incredibly bad social anxiety which makes going outside to walk all but impossible, and I am really bad at doing squats and stuff with proper form so I'm really worried about damaging myself. I'm kinda at a loss for exercise I can do now, but I'm also too anxious to ask my techy knowhow partner to figure out how treadmills work so he can fix it. I have limited space and I'm on the heavier side so things like jumping jacks are a lot more strain on me - does anyone have any ideas maybe?

!!!! after vacationing and carrying around heavy things and being active for like two whole weeks i have a bit of arm and leg muscle! how do i keep them?

also on a completely different note, does anyone know a good resource for learning yoga from home? I have a weak joint syndrome thing and yoga would be a good way to hopefully delay arthritis from kicking in

I dunno about Yoga but I just watched my first of 3 Tai Chi Amazon Streams

    Tai Chi Fundamentals for Beginners
    Demonstrated by Jesse Tsao.

It's an hour long, about 1/2 & 1/2 history and techniques but very gentle and clear. And also adorable because there's very distinct edit cuts where he starts to laugh at something.

    It's the 13 basic forms
    Hand positions/movement
    Leg positions/movement
    Combining the two
Brief basics on how they're used in self defense.

There's no actual routine, it's just the steps but having them separated out step by step was very helpful

And holy crap is it relaxing. I could feel that the motions were requiring effort and strength even in the short tutorial use but it was still very smooth and gentle. He was very clear that you don't need to carry the motions as far or fast as he does and not to push too hard and hurt yourself. And I feel significantly more chill. Definitely doing this on the regular.

It's free if you have Amazon Prime. I'm using a PS4 but you can stream on a computer. You can buy 'em off Amazon as a digital copy for ~$8.

It's basically Netflix but with better quality and you can buy stuff.

Been keeping up once around the lake per day except Thursday gaming night! I skipped Saturday because obligations but did twice in a row Sunday.

    Also:

In the SCA if you with the Crown Tournament you and your consort get to be heirs to the throne for six months, then regents (king and queen) for the next six. After that, you get the title of count. Do it twice and you're a duke. My D&D group has four dukes (all are also knights), and they might let me in on their private fighters practice.

Finally figured out the first Chen Style Tai Chi form. Apparently the trick is to close my eyes so I don't accidentally mirror the instructor instead of matching him.

    ...only 19 more to go

i am in a very similar situation. i can only bring myself to do outdoor walkies on really good days--so instead what i've been doing is a combination of crunches, leg lifts, modified pushups (knees on the floor) and some of http://darebee.com/workouts.html these. the boxer ones are A+.

    --

on an unrelated note i've managed to keep this up for a whole week and i am re-learning how nice it is to have tired muscles. ;; it's so good. AND on top of that my stimtastic order came in today and now i have multiple chewies so that i can stop sabotaging myself by eating to appease the need to chew. (gum never worked for me.)

Aw man, I wish I could be more involved with SCA, especially the fighters, but I live an hour and a half away from where we meet and have to drive one of the most dangerous highways in the US to get there. With their fighter practice being late on weekdays, it's kind of just a given no I can't go.

I do think something like that would give me a good excuse to get more in shape though.

Which direction are you? There's a smaller practice at Anoka Ramsey Community College most Friday nights too.

I misread your title as "covered in beers".
