What's the point at which you admit that you're in over your head in interdimensional shenanigans? Just wondering.

(Actually I would tend to say that at the point you stop suspecting you're in over your head, you are in fact now completely in over your head.)

 

...that is not yet a thing I have tried. I'm... not sure I can, within the bounds of my current experience of alternate universes - I seem to always end up experiencing things from inside my counterpart's viewpoint. I have, however, been universe-traveling with someone from my continuity who I'm barely allies with here, but ended up marrying in another continuity. That was. Awkward.

Both answers are illustrative! I've just been summoned for a conference with the High King on yet another important matter, and the last time that happened I may have accidentally desynchronized the planes while I edited reality for a bit, so I'm a bit on edge about what's going to be asked of me this time.

"When the cosmic entities causing the mess aren't accepting the regular offerings any more" is one of the signs I've heard a lot, closely followed by "When you don't know what the frag is going on any more".
I sincerely hope you have not reached either of those yet.

Causation is... somewhat complicated to sort out. And not knowing what's going on is a typical early stage of any adventure; we typically get it sorted eventually, or at least sorted enough to start untangling things. Right now, I don't yet know what the High King wants from me. My nervousness is entirely predicated on the chaos that followed the last time he was directly involved in quest granting. It all turned out to the net positive, but... :/

Being cleanup crew is a thankless job, unless you're doing it for fun.

 

I did volunteer. And there's a certain degree to which a lot of this work is mine because one of my alternate selves created the mechanism by which this work... exists? We wouldn't have the library of memories without her, at least. Cleaning up after myself is complicated, but at least I seem to have left myself some trails to follow.

It's cleaning up after the High King's past mistakes that can be... frustrating. But the people being hurt by the mistakes don't deserve me refusing out of personal frustration.

 

Any situation in which you have to edit reality is by definition one in which you're over your head.

Fair enough.

We're fighting against someone who's been plotting the takeover of these planes since nearly the dawn of time by using my personal connection to the planar library of memories to recover data he's being trying to erase. It gets... surreal. No one really knows what's happening, and that's part of the problem.

The omniscience of this setting at least lets me know that my son, the librarian, has been working on fixing that "de-synchronizing the planes" problem, which will be helpful. The mortals might not survive being isolated from the higher planes this time, with as bad as things are getting.

Have you tried breaking the connection? To the planar library, I mean.

Mortals rarely seem to use our connection to anything above Tiferet, but cut it off and we do in fact die.

 

We're not sure how it works, but we think I'm the connection to the planar library. So.

We do know that there was a time when the planar library didn't exist, so the planes we use would probably continue to survive without it, but at minimum, we'd lose our ability to gather information in our fight against the Lord of Plots. Also I'm not sure what would happen to my son.

 

Mission update:

Not only is the Lord of Plots involved, the ancient drakes may also be. Which is disturbing - their power almost destroyed the planet once, and if he's manipulating them or gaining their alliance...

I don't have brainspace to worry about that for the next minute or so, though, because I just got told by the High King, the First Being, the ultimate arbiter of law, to go ahead and alter my investigation as I see fit because he trusts my judgement.
