Point of clarification: we weren't frozen out of a hot spot. We were crafted sparks as well, spliced from existing sparks. Protoforms are removed from hotspots once they're stable enough to withstand gentle touch, and then raised by the crew that took them in; what informs their eventual alt-mode we still don't know. Certainly not surroundings, at least on our planet-- of the four I've raised, not a single one has come out a flier like me or my bonded.

Two developmental stages, yes. A protoform is significantly less-developed-- usually they don't even have limbs, just a fragile casing around a spark and maybe some helm or facial definition. Sparklings (or sparklets, or whatever you want to call them) are usually mobile on their own, at the very least-- the line between 'sparkling' and 'adult' is generally when one develops all the... parts? We call it kibble, the external armor plating not specifically devoted to protecting one's insides, usually taking some part of the alt-mode. Some mechs-- like Cogwheels, if he'll come back and be so good as to be an example-- continue growing in size even once their kibble fills in, but that's generally a very short stage.
