start by having hair. it is probably beneficial if it's at least this length because shit gets fiddly with shorter hair.


grab section at front. I'm usually doing the section measured from eyebrow arch to eyebrow arch because face symmetry and all that jazz. pull the section to one side.


no comes the part that should have been photographed from the other side but uh...
okay basically you wanna place whatever finger you prefer (I do my pinky finger because it's most comfy for me) with the tip against the scalp BEHIND the section of hair in your other hand, so off-center towards the direction you are pulling the section.


wrap your hair around your finger once, so that the rest of the section sticks out at the bottom (you will need to lift your fingertip off your head shortly but place it right down again after wrapping for stability reasons), if you feel you should, slide the entire swirl slightly forward so the front becomes more like a pompadour,
then slide one or two bobbypins in there at the bottom of the swirl so it's secured (but not at the top, because that part is supposed to be sticking up?), ideally choose bobby pins that match closely to your hair's color, and if you can slide them in from the back of the swirl so the pin isn't visible so easily.

if your hair is longer than mine you may be able to pull the loose ends of the swirly section into a ponytail or bun or whatever with the rest of the hair, otherwise, bobbypin and hair spray that shit down until it looks like the complete section was rolled into a roll and you aren't a cheating cheater pants (there are ways to achieve genuine pin up curls like that but I can't visually show them off well because I am having a bad hands day and can't finger acrobatics)
