they've got 5-10 dollar a mo option for simpler stuff and the features look great, but its definitely not a good tumblr alternative.

i think i'll keep a soup account and wordpress with my blogs backed up (really wish wordpress had some sort of sideblogs, i'd rather not mix them all into one) just in case for now til something better comes along. my soup is Deresto and my wordpress is oldshoesnewtunes if anyone's interested.

    Soup review so far:

The repost and respond difference is interesting. If you repost, it's like a tag-less reblog. If you respond, you can add text and title and tags and all that jazz.... but it shows up on your soup like it's behind a cut/spoiler, and people click the |> triangle to actually show the post you're responding to. Definitely a different format.

eta, Also, I have nsfw enabled, and I've seen a decent number of fairly artistic nudes with penises. Like, good enough images to use as anatomy references. Far fewer boobs than anticipated. Not sure if this is a pro or con.

eta 2: I found the boobs. And some butts.

    Soup experimentation in progress here

I think it means you can't import reblogs, only your own pictures/photos/art that you submitted yourself.
I knew some artists who post their loli/shota stuff on Soup since it's not allowed on Tumblr, so I assume that it only goes for real life depictions? That was some time ago though, so maybe the rules have changed. I agree though, that is some very unclear wording.

About the Nazi thing, I think the Austrian law is relatively similar to the German law in that regard, so it really is just about the insignia. Fictional Nazi or Nazi inspired organisations are no problem as long as they don't use rl Nazi symbols.
Also, usually there's an exception for realistic historic works to be allowed to use them, but I guess they want to play it safe?
I actually remember cases where people got in trouble for wearing patches with struck out swastikas. They were obviously not supposed to glorify nazism - pretty much the opposite - but they still depicted a swastika. So I understand why the site owners would rather not risk it.

So far soup is looking decent. I'm just really bummed that tumblr is becoming increasingly unusable, because it was basically what I moved to from pinterest- it's the place where I can collect stuff I like all in one place, but also with the option to add commentary in a (somewhat) less clunky way. Not a huge fan of having to expand posts to see previous content, but I guess it's a good solution to dash-stretchers. @swirlingflight, do you have any idea what it looks like if there's a post with a chain of reactions?

ETA: I want to be on the site that follows this guy's advice :c

    A chain of reactions!

It lets you see each of the reactions in the chain! Just the text, not the tags (alas) but I'm liking this so far.

Oh man, this post is making me giggle, and I'm saving a copy to look at and pass on to people later.

Thank you for sciencing the thing!

And yes, Kit shared the post to me, and I was like "this needs to go in the Done thread" XD

Also i'm pretty ok with ads not actually managing to display, so as glitches go, that's more 'haha oops c:' than 'awww fuck :c'

I'm currently copying my entire Tumblr into a private Wordpress so I'll at least have backup for all the text. Don't want my endless Radiant Historia meta and shitposts to be in danger, after all. :::PPP

My tumblr is way too huge to import to wordpress, but I'm giving it a try anyway while I look for a better option. I'll be sad to see tumblr go, though. It sucks as a site in so many ways but it's by far the best site around for fandom lurkers like me - even though I'm too shy to talk or contribute much, I still felt like a part of the community for the first time on tumblr because of all the conversation and enthusiasm that went flowing by me. It was easy to tell what was on fandom's collective mind at any given time. And I could contribute safely in the tags without taking the anxiety-inducing extra step of adding to the body of the post. On Dreamwidth and similar sites, you're either active or you're totally invisible, or at least that's what it feels like. I hope that that byfandom site takes off, I'd be willing to pay $10 for a site that combines the best features of Dreamwidth with the community accessibility of tumblr.

    So I has created a soup.io - the name is **SURPRISE** Lysikan.soup.io
Hasn't said anything there or found anyone to follow - but I is there.
May use Wordpress mostly since it lets me echo to tumblr, twitter, and facebook.

Edit: Made the soup.io not white - still working on Wordpress.

Interestingly - soup.io seems to default to showing NSFW content to non-logged-in people. I has made my first post (the "Waiting To Swim" image of a nude looking longingly out at a pool) and flagged it NSFW. When I turn on "Safe content only" I can't see it even while logged in. Ancient Guardian, without an account, can see it.

There's not really anything out there that I could comfortably replace tumblr with. I've spent probably a year of my life digging around for art on the internet pre-tumblr - going from account to account, painstakingly clicking on all the thumbnails to see if I liked something then saving masses of fanart on my harddrive because that was the only way I could find it again. With tumblr, the art just comes to me and it's fantastic. It's going to take more than autoplay ads and general bullfuckery to drive me away for good.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do when the site goes down for good. I've been hoarding art for years with it in carefully curated tags, that's not something you can just import into wordpress.

Edit: soup.io looks promising? I dunno.

That could be a good use of Sitesucker/HTTrack. Could store a copy of the whole blog archive on your hard drive, with tag links intact. It'd at least be a good backup whenever Tumblr starts making rumbling noises of a "Yahoo's about to kill another fandom archive" nature.

Not so far. I haven't found a way to find people to follow. It's a very simple interface, which is good, but, like Dreamwidth and LiveJournal, it seems you need to know people's names to find people.
