Yeah, that's true. I'm a little leery to do that with my laptop. My blog has 22,000 posts, I'm afraid of the harddrive space that's going to eat up, my laptop is old and only has about 20 gig left. Ooh boy, I'm not sure if it's possible to make and maintain something as robust at tumblr for $5,000 (not that tumblr is all that robust). It might work out, but the site doesn't even exist yet.
I'm genuinely distressed tumblr just keeps getting worse - it's the only online place I've been able to make significant connections in years, and there's nowhere else I feel as comfortable communicating through, even with how rotten the community has become. If tumblr goes 90% of my means of expressing myself and a great deal of my friends and acquaintances will go too. I will lose contact with so many people. Everywhere else making a post or commenting feels like such a big formal thing. On tumblr I can be 110% casual and hide in the tags and sometimes that's the only way I can make myself say things at all. .....do any of the tumblr-alternative sites have similar tagging systems? :c
I think they can pull it off. I mean, they got $5000 for the beta alone (they were asking for 600) and they're planning on implementing all of the best features that Tumblr has. They're gonna get a lot more than that.
Soup seems to have a decent tagging system, as does Wordpress. Medium is terrible about tags, as it only allows 3 on a post, so not even good for keeping track of your own posts. Dreamwidth tags seem to work, but I didn't use them well. Been digging through my archives there to tag old stuff.
I can't figure out how to add a person to my friends unless they add me first! Search by name always fails, and finding their site does not have an option to 'follow' or 'friend'. Soup experts, please advise.
Aha - I has you, Bel. Now to figure out why I can't see Mycelia as a name - it shows as a blog but no option to friend
I just imported my tumblr (my 4 tumblrs, actually) and it looks like the content did in fact get transferred! Maybe it just takes a little while to show up? but yeah, for me my imported tumblr posts are showing up on my soup page. The tags don't get carried over, though. :/ And I'm not sure if the content actually gets moved from tumblr to soup, or just displayed there, which if true would mean that your tumblr posts wouldn't show up after your tumblr was deleted, which would defeat the purpose of archiving. I may experiment more. I'm adisagestar over there, by the way!
My tumblr has been imported to wordpress - not sure if I will also copy to soup (at least until I figure it out better).
I've tested it and it appears that soup will keep a post even when the tumblr where that post originated has changed its url since the post was imported. I'm not sure about what will happen if you delete an account because I'm too afraid of accidentally deleting my main blog to delete a sideblog >_<
Maybe we should have a doc full of everyone's Soup or Wordpress accounts and link it in the first post? I want to follow everyone but I don't want to have to comb through the thread for usernames, because I am lazy :P I would make the thing myself, but I should already be asleep by now...
