Also, since I think it might be a cultural clash point: we read comms with our brains. We can display the contents as a visual on our HUD, as audio in certain circumstances, or transfer it wirelessly to a dataslab for viewing there. Hacking someone's comms isn't the same as mnemosurgery, which is a more in-depth form of mindreading and sometimes brainwashing, but it is disturbingly intimate, given that comms are frequently composed and sent off as easy as thoughts.

Scanner may not be able to help it, but that doesn't mean that his smug masturbatory glee over being able to view them, with someone whose only means of communication frequently entails the thing he is viewing, isn't deliberately targeted.

    -rolls his optics-
I'm pointy, green and wear a red batch what of that doesn't scream totally trustworthy in your opinion?
You act like I'm a 'con and would actually frag someone over with private details I'm just
    :)
    Joking around.
    All in good fun!

Cybertronian factions mean nothing to me.

Don't want to talk to you. Your fun is not my fun.

Autobots under Zeta Prime's control participated in mass slaughter of the poor and starving while claiming to be hunting out Decepticon sympathizers, frequently using planted agents to sniff out wayhouses for the needy under the guise of finding terrorist cells.

The only difference between an Autobot and a Decepticon is the badge color. Nothing. Else.

I seem to recall you starting quite a few conversations in ways i couldn't hear. Hm. I wonder how that is.
    You're cute too.
Why is Lacuna-dear's "can't" worth more than mine again? OOPS it isn't.
Ohhhhhhh someone hand me ice for that burn.
Uh-huh try again. Try like two million years into the war. I wouldn't even fragging know who Zeta Prime was if I wasn't an information hoarder.

Although I'd imagine there were policy differences between Autobots under Zeta Prime's rule and Autobots later, I can't say how large those differences would be. It does strike me as weird they're considered the 'good guys'. Is there such a clear moral line in a civil war?

Then maybe you shouldn't be making sweeping statements on what Autobots do and don't do, sweetspark.

I mean. It really isn't. I'll encrypt things I don't want you reading but I'm not going to spam the comms systems with encrypted comms. If you start leaking things, then I'll encrypt more. Tentative truce.

No. Speaking from experience, people simply like to pretend there is so they can recharge a little better.

It's not like you should blame something for everything their faction did. I mean, I guess that gets fuzzier if they're named 'Megatron' or 'Optimus Prime', but I'm pretty sure even they didn't have complete control over what individuals were doing. Right?

Now here's a thought. @Scanner If a comm contains a virus, are you forced to download it when you read it?

-0 Targeted, sure, but I cannot imagine it isn't expected.
-0 Are there not regulations for the release of details contained in private correspondences?

-0 The 'good guys' are on the side who wins.

    It's not.

But "heard" =/= "must immediately make public". Despite onboard inclinations, gossip is not necessary for healthy functioning.

Not going to try and stop you. But also not going to be quiet about my own feelings on the matter.

(...secondly, Lacuna and Refractor are friends, and am currently bonded to Refractor. Should hope the resulting alliance is obvious.)

    True.

There are, for the record. Cybertron actually doing something right for once.

But as Scanner is not technically part of our ship's staff, would be up to one of the captains to pursue appropriate retribution. Which is fragging stupid, but.

There's cultural mores but given that our government is in a constant state of flux following on a 4 million year civil war where the previous government was violently overthrown (and good riddance) I am not sure that there are regulations for anything. Autobot and Decepticon regs differ, as do colonial ones, and nonaligned Cybertronians were mostly given to the beck and call of their ship captains. I have no idea what regs the TEAM runs under, especially with the frankly bizarre command structure it was given.
    Ah, I stand corrected.

No no no I think you misunderstood those italics were for sarcasm, HAH do you really think I don't realize the people who made me gave no slag whatsoever if I was actually capable of functioning like a normal mech? No. No they clearly didn't. I stuck around but mostly because I am utterly apathetic about this. Except when I get to be a douchebag about it :)

Beautiful, lookin forward to that processor ache sweetness.
Because it's not like the comms process as reading for me you know. But it doesn't matter if pure darling Scanner gets his audials assaulted by mangled garbage translation shrieks all the time, right?
That info is confidential sweetspark :)
Me saying I'm listenig doesn't actually mean I am also saying I'm going to make everything public SHEESH
Imagine it as a little WARNING if you will, that on every little comm date, your third wheel friend Scanner the creep is sitting right next to you, eating popcorn.

Depends on the individual in question.

And my former faction has done some horrific things that I would very much like to disavow responsibility for - I had some influence, but not much, on a grand scale - but... I was there when they happened. I stayed on their side. Therefore, I aligned myself with them. That's my responsibility, at least.

A nightmarish mishmash of bureaucratic nightmares and leftover military command structures, some shared by both sides and some inexplicable to both. If you ask a question about the regs, the answer is likely to be "whatever makes life hardest for command staff", and if it's not that, it's "whatever made the council look best".

So, your solutions are 'don't use comms' which isn't viable for Lacuna, and 'accept that I will be listening in on everything', which isn't viable for anyone. Hm. No. I think I am more than okay with the degree of pain that encryptions cause you. Such a shame, terribly sorry, have you considered locating an empty moon to sit on until the heat death of the universe? That seems like the best option for everyone.

I will happily pass that confidential information onto Flux though. He's always interested in security holes, and given that a virus could ping your systems and then branch out into everyone, I imagine he'll be very interested in this.
