The same reason one might spend an extra amount of money on gourmet food? Or go travelling to a different planet for vacation, despite the hassle and headaches the process might cause? Learning a new dance routine, despite the strain on muscles and wires, leaving you shaking with exhaustion but so triumphant once you're done? Sometimes the things that we're interested in are worth the pain, even if those things don't seem worth it.

Though, as a note, emotional intimacy does not require jealousy and hurt feelings. Monogamy, open relationships, and polyamoury are all viable ways to engage in romantic or sexual interactions. And just because a relationship isn't romantic doesn't mean that hurt feelings can't abound. Plenty of nonsexual, nonromantic friendships go horrifically awry because of jealousy and miscommunication.

...wild emotions are going to happen anyway, even if I don't get attached to anyone.
