When you admit you did somethin' wrong while still doin' another wrong thing (not takin' responsibility for what you've done is not attractive), it makes you look twice as much like an aft as before. Stop shootin' yourself in the foot. Already got one self-sabotagin' slagger t' deal with for free. An' he at least pays me back. In a slightly diff'rent form.

Okay, Norm, let me take this one.

"Magic" is a word, and it appears to be a word that you don't like.

I can understand that. It's not a very useful word, because lots of different people use it to mean different things, for different reasons, and they generally all believe that they are right about their usage of it, and that makes life really difficult sometimes!

Rarity is using the word to describe some kind of innate power she possesses, and apparently in her dimension, unicorns usually possess this power. I'm not sure why they call it 'magic', or rather a word that translates as such in this interstitium. (We're almost certainly not actually all speaking the same language here.) But when she uses the word, that's what she means, and the power she possesses must be real--at least in her dimension--because it allows her to do things she can't do with her body. I'm pretty sure no unicorn has ever operated a sewing machine unaided only by using her hooves, aren't you? And she's not delusional, because she has made things for other people using this ability, and Discord is not behaving the way he would if she were delusional and he were humoring her.

(I don't know that I trust Discord, given that he seems to be getting along well with Bill, but...that's not important for the purpose of this discussion. I don't trust Discord to have anyone else's best interests in mind, but that doesn't mean I'd assume he was lying about something like Rarity making clothing.)

Anyhow. Rarity uses the word to describe a power some people have and some other people don't. That's one common way the word is used. I've heard the skeletons, and other people from their world, such as Clover, use it similarly, except that they also use it to describe a substance they believe they are made of, even though they appear to be made of bone, or flesh, or kinds of living material. That's a less common way to use the word.

The word is frequently used in many cultures to describe ways of accomplishing goals that work for some people, but not for others, when nobody knows why that is. That's ... kind of a dangerous way to interpret it, because it frequently comes with an assumption that some unseen power is actually doing the work, and often that carries a bonus assumption that whatever power is involved must be evil. When people start talking about magic like that, your best bet is to get as far away as fast as you can, because once that gets going, it doesn't matter whether you can actually do any magic or not; people go after anyone the group doesn't like, and they become susceptible to believing things they wouldn't ordinarily believe.

It can also be used to describe sleight-of-hand and other forms of trickery or physical illusion.

Anyhow, the thing to remember when someone tells you that something is 'magic' is that they probably don't know how it works. Otherwise, they'd say "it's alchemical", or "I summoned an elemental", or "it's life energy that our bodies produce".

But most of the time, depending on what dimension you're in, you'd be very unwise to dismiss the possibility that something is real just because someone described it as 'magic'!

It may very well not be magic in whatever sense of the word you commonly use. But that doesn't mean that it's not actually happening, and more importantly, it doesn't mean that it can't hurt you.

    Trust me on this one.

Scepticism allowed me to get into a mess with what I thought was an alien being of immense wisdom and power.

The only part I was right about was the power, and he didn't use it for anything benevolent.

It's also a waste of your time to argue with people about whether or not magic is real when what you really need to know is whether or not the effect of the so-called magic is real. I only get into this argument with people I'm trying to teach, because the distinctions are important. But most people who use this word use it because they're happy believing in powers that may or may not be real and not having to think too hard about how things actually happen.
