shelties are such great dogs. so smart and bossy. my big one is convinced i am supposed to be in my room at all times and she puts me back there whenever i leave to use the bathroom. the little one knows all the words and probably some grammar too.

I just opened up six tabs worth of local shelters and the dogs they have thanks to this thread. I can't get another dog right now, but I can't resist looking at them all.

    SHELTIES!
I love shelties they're the only smol dogs with enough smarts and moxie to play properly with my horse of a GSD. He is big and plays hard and every other dog in the park is afraid of him because Huge.

Except the shelties. One chased him around the park for three solid hours
    He was was So Happy.

    Secret Squirrel certainly something

    DOGS!! I love them.

I would love to have a dog, but I don't think I would be capable of always taking one for a walk when it needs to go potty. ): So to have one, I would need to have a place with a backyard where it could go. And I am not gonna be able to acquire that kind of property for a long time. XD

I've always loved the way Airedales look, but if I got I dog I would probably go get a mutt from the pound. I like medium/medium large dogs, big enough I won't feel like I'd accidentally hurt them but not so big I'd worry about them accidentally hurting me. XD

  11. ...i just emailed an adoption group about a pair of greyhound sibs because they didn't post their kennel's name and i am deadly curious and like to look thru the kennels' facebook pages for puppy pix of the dogs up for adoption if they have them. also i want them desperately i want every dog that the greyhound advancement center and bay area greyhound adoptions put up for adoption desperately

my current pups are a lhasa apso and a chihuahua. both are good lil puppers.

i like the looks of a lot of large breeds but know i can't handle them. too weak for a strong dog, and i know i couldn't give a very active dog the activity level it'd need.

in the future i'll likely just go through a rescue so it's kind of a ??? what breeds i would have. i'd like to in the future when space allows foster/perma-foster senior dogs and/or cats. kind of My Dream. even a senior large dog i think i could handle. or even just be a foster home for any dog while having one or two dogs that are permanently mine. \

i'd consider getting another lhasa, shih tzu, or mix again in the future? only negative for me with those breeds is needing to pay for grooming every 6-8 weeks. i dunno if i'd want another chihuahua.. he's technically not mine, though i do love him, but the breed is just kind of. nothing really stands out. and when a dog reaches a point of smallness where there is always a worry of just breaking it somehow it's a little scary. my lhasa is kind of a low rider but she's nearly double the chi's weight and generally feels much sturdier. something her size or somewhat bigger is good for me.

Salted Earth DISOWNING DOESN'T STACK, ASSHOLE

My favourite dogs are newfoundlands!! I've never been able to own one (bad climate, too small a house, etc) but they are my favourite giant puppers to read about and watch just oh my godddd. My partner's favourite are corgis, so we end up trading videos about them a Lot.

I don't have a dog currently (though the guy who lives in the granny flat behind us owns a Small Dog who is My Friend, she is very good). I've thought about getting one and training them to be a therapy dog but I feel like I would not be very good at dog ownership because I am Terrible at going outside. So mostly I just borrow guy's dog for hugs and watch dog videos and screech about the doggo every time I see one on the street. DID YOU SEE THAT DOG THAT DOG WAS SO GOOD

My family did own dogs growing up, and I have a Brave Dog Story! Two Brave Dog Stories in fact.
When I was a baby my dad's dog - a cattle dog mix - was The Most Heroic Dog, Holy Shit. Like... when my dad was drunk and fell into the pool, it was his dog who went and alerted my mom so she could drag him out. And then, when I was a smol toddler, I was playing outside and two of the neighbour's dogs got off their leashes or something and they were going to attack me, because they were not being treated very well and I was a small target I guess. But dad's doggo got in the way and got all torn up defending me from those dogs and my parents managed to grab me without me getting mauled by a dog. They ended up having to put poor doggo in surgery but he managed to survive, even though he had chronic pain ever since and most of my memories of him growing up are of Grumpy Dog Who Does Not Want To Be Touched. But like. That dog may have saved my tiny little life and honestly I have no ill will towards dogs even if they were the ones attacking me because doggo saved my life, holy shit. I don't know how much of that story is overemphasised because my mother was the one who'd tell it, but I definitely grew up knowing just how heroic that dog was. And that's why dogs are Pure and Good to me.

My dogs growing up were a cattle dog cross (who we ended up having to give away because she got violent because I was like seven or eight and had no clue how to raise a dog and my mother didn't help at all), and a kelpie cross who I managed to raise slightly better and who was my companion through my teenage years. Now I'm an adult I've never had a dog because I've never lived in a place which allowed them, but I retain my love of dogs.

  14. Jaaaade

    Jaaaade magnoliajades, here!

I can honestly only say what my favorite dog breeds are from my personal experience. But I'd say my absolute top favorite is the golden retriever. My family had one with us for about 12 years. Very beautiful and sweet dogs, so pure and good.

What's better is that I... haven't exactly gained huge appreciation for dogs until only recently? (I've been a cat person my whole life.. still am) It could be due to me having grown more depressed over time, and nothing soothes that quite like a puppy noticing I'm home and running excitedly to greet me and give me kisses etc.
(Today I get these greetings from our super silly mini dacschund at home. )

Plus... dogs are way better than people.

  18. Hatchback

Hatchback ... he is just fine again today

@Jaaaade - Same, actually, for a while I thought I didn't really like dogs despite knowing a lot about them (training, etc.... it was a bit of a fascination in my adolescence, and there were always dogs around) and living with them all my life, then eventually I realised I didn't like untrained dogs owned by people I don't know and I actually adore dogs that I either know well or trained myself. (I really like cats, but I'm too allergic to live with one. Sadly.)

In general, though mixed-breeds are A Good in my mind, I want to do specific things with a dog partner, some of which can't really be trained in (i.e. lure coursing), so I tend to prefer specific purebreds. In a perfect world, I'd like to have a watch or guard dog. In the meantime, I'm excited to hopefully have a sports partner in a few years' time, once things stabilise - I plan to get a whippet (blue or brindle, if the stars align correctly, but it doesn't matter, you can't train colour). I would also strongly consider a rescue Greyhound, though!

Also @taxonomicAtrocity that sure is a beautiful silky dog my goodness.

theambernerd dead to all sense of shame

I don't have an especially large interest in Dog but your mentioning of Dobermans reminded me!! In one of my animation classes the prof was requiring us to make a 8-10 second human/animal interaction animation with either a species of cat or dog, and he had to approve the species before we could start working, and his recommended animals were either a lioness or a doberman! So Dobermans are apparently like, prime Learn How To Animate Dog type dogs.
