    Secret Squirrel certainly something

    @swirlingflight ;0; !!

    Maybe it's not too late for Amethyst to get some strategic combat training? She's been able to communicate her feelings better lately and is somewhat more willing to listen to others, so it's more likely now than it was at the beginning of the series. She might see that it's worthwhile, seeing what it has done for Connie.

    @Shingleback[/USER]] It's not too late, but, knowing Amethyst, she's going to put up a front of doubling down on doing things her way---how's she going to find a socially-acceptable-to-her-peers way of copying what makes Jasper successful?

    The Mutant ' w '

    Finally caught up- till the day before yesterday, I hadn't seen anything since Hit the Diamond.

    AME BBY ;3;
    And of course everyone's yelling over the next ep being called Steven vs. Amethyst after this wham episode we just got, but the title's got me hmm-ing- the showmakers could have EASILY picked a name that hid the fact that there's potentially some Steven/Amethyst conflict to come, but they decided to just lay it right there in the title, which makes me (possibly unjustly?) suspicious that we're being misled or misdirected. :B

    That's definitely not the end of that plot thread, though, whatever happens next! purple bby you are Important, pls don't try to make yourself more Jasper-y (or god forbid, join her).

    Completely beside the point, but am I the only one who thinks Undyne from Undertale should sound exactly like Jasper?

    This has barely anything to do with the episode but:

    Remember when Lapis described the ocean as her "tomb"? Jasper apparently decided she lives there now, and I can't help but think of the imagery of Utena where characters "live in their coffins".

    (also sent this as an anon ask to Luka because he has so many good thoughts about Utena and understands the symbolism a lot better than I do lol.)

    Gahhh I just backtracked through 87 pages of my dash trying to find a post and couldn't find it. It was something like 'i hope jasper just keeps showing up doing random things and taunting steven, like, showing up at the library 'hey rose look what i'm doing''

    and so on.

    And i can't find it!

    Now I want that. I also want her to be the Vegeta complete with marrying someone they know. Like she just settles down with the mayor or some shit and then a gem monster god shows up and hits him and she is like DON'T YOU HIT MY DEWEY and goes apeshit. And it's great.

    I think Jasper's just keeping herself busy. We know she looks at fighting as all she is ("what I was made for") and we saw how bored and listless she was on the ship without conflict to feed on. She lit up like a Christmas tree at an opportunity to fight Garnet, and we see that now- any time she sees "Rose", she jabs and taunts and escalates her aggression.

    We know now that Jasper and her ilk are a dying breed, that most new gems are woefully underpowered. I think that Jasper's motivation is rooted in centuries of her "time in action" being slowly scaled back as she became a rarer and more valuable commodity. It's pretty sure now that's the reason the Rubies were sent after her- gone are the days of shattering gems on a whim.

    I think that Jasper is just enjoying some newfound freedom, in the only way that she can. She doesn't really understand the Gems, or what Steven is, but she understands punching. She is damn fluent in punching.

    I want a Jasper redemption arc because I want all my space rocks to be happy.

    edit: I think a redemption arc is possible if Steven ever reaches out to her, the only thing stopping it at that point would be if she refused his help. Which is a very real possibility. Especially when this show could be be foreshadowing this with Marty and Kevin as examples of jerks who are just jerks, and the lesson at the end of Greg the babysitter where you have to choose to "grow up".

    Yeah, one thing that bugs me sometimes when people insist on Jasper getting redeemed is that... well... she clearly doesn't want to. At least not right now- I'm pretty agnostic on where she's ultimately going to end up, but if it is redemption, for god's sake let's not rush it. They didn't rush Peridot's.

    To be fair, Peridot never really wanted to be redeemed either. She joined them out of self preservation after she ran out of options, and she gradually changed as she learned about Earth and the gems. Even then, after months of bonding she never wanted to betray Homeworld and join them. She became a crystal gem by default when she called Yellow Diamond a clod, and she was really unhappy about that for awhile.

    Lapis isn't really a crystal gem so much as she is Steven's friend.

    I saw a post going around tumblr that said that Jasper's entire identity revolves around her fulfilling her "purpose", so for her own sake I hope she has a redemption arc because that's not healthy. But at this point I'm not really sure what a redemption arc for her would look like.

    I don't necessarily mean wanting from the beginning to change sides and be Crystal and all that- more that things followed naturally from each other? Like- at first Peri wanted to survive, and helping the CGs was acceptable in the absence of other options. After she grew attached, while she still didn't want to betray Homeworld, she did want to protect Earth, and when those goals turned out to be irreconcilable she found the consequences plenty upsetting but she did make the choice.

    Jasper seems to actively want the opposite of anything that leads in that direction. It's not impossible for a similar chain of development to happen to her, but it'll take a significant amount of time and not be apparent early on unless they do it rushed and unsatisfying.

    strictly quadrilateral alive, alive, alive!

    i think I'd like it best if Steven reaches out, she refuses, and then later she decides that she'd like a redemption arc and tries to take him up on it. Steven would be reasonably suspicious, but he'd help in the end. It goes along with everything that's been happening I think

    Give Jasper a training montage: teach her to be strong in the real way.

    Appeal to what already motivates her.... If only we knew if it's more the chance to be strong, the chance to defeat others, or what.

    mostly... Yeah, makes sense for character arc so far

    But :(
