...I can't speak for the others, but Rust and I are from a society that values personal freedom above all else. Eliana's phrasing implies some ability to control others' emotions, which is... disturbing, for us.

Mmm... the specific way I was visualizing that spell being used was the way my friend Gianni used to use it - when our planning room got too tense and argumentative, to kind of clear the air and help people take a breath and reconsider with a clearer mind. The magical equivalent of someone speaking up with a big voice and saying "EVERYONE CALM DOWN," only with more overall success at that goal and less commanding overtones.

@Silverburst and Rust - it's technically from a school of spells that are somewhat related to mind control, but I find commanding magic deeply personally horrifying as well. Spells like calm emotions function much more as suggestions than mandates. I certainly wasn't intending to even imply I'd infringe on someone's freedom like that.
