The choreography of the opening ceremony of the Olympics has been a sort of stylized dance retelling of the history of Brazil, and it's apparently not very well-thought-out, and there were.. slaves dancing on a giant hamster wheel structure? I genuinely couldn't tell if it was meant to represent something other than a hamster wheel..

 

tbf, there were also guys in cement shoes that seems p accurate to social and economic prospects of former slaves

it started w dark skinned guys in loincloths to portray the indigenous peoples. then there where white guys on ships, shortly followed by loads of black people in chains or on hamster wheels or wearing what looked a lot like cement shoes. they managed to blame the deforestation of the Amazon on slavery (nevermind that they're still doing that, and also they were the last country in the world to outlaw slavery). and then, figuring they hadn't made the whole world cringe enough, they decided to use every stereotype they could reasonably manage, esp costumes, when they covered the country's first influx of Asian immigrants

it was amazing in the worst way. also, I'm 90% sure the music from the section on the indigenous peoples was the same as that part of the jungle cruise ride at Disneyworld w the pygmies and witch doctors (if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up bc that ride is amazing it hasn't been updated in 50 years and it shows so it's like ten straight minutes of racism and puns)

edit: oh! forgot there was more after that, bc then they had to talk about urbanization, which of course meant black guys break dancing and almost featured a skit where Tom Brady's wife got mugged by a black guy, but mercifully someone figured out that it might be just a little too racist, even for brazil

edit 2x combob: if you can access the nbc version of the broadcast (I have no idea if it's region locked or something) you absolutely should bc Brian Williams' understated commentary was gr8. you can almost hear him biting back what he actually wants to say about the proceedings
