Well, I would admit: I might be used to bitey chihuahuas, but if I found out of a chihuahua who learned how to handle spears and fencing swords, and was assisting in spearheading a revolution against dog owners worldwide, I'd be a mite surprised.

I think it would be rare to see a Pearl DESIGNED for fighting, rather than for being pretty or helpful... at least, it would be at first, but I feel like Pearl-owner-ranking gems might get competitive about it (even if the original intent was like FL's post) and want *their pearl* to *win.* now I want fic about this.
so in keeping with the source material, is this quote being spoken by carnelian in disguise, or carnelian's Pearl in disguise? :P
A bit late but I don't think the "Art? That's ridiculous!" "I've been calling it meepmorp" meant that Peridot and Lapis don't know what art is, just that what they were doing wasn't what they thought art was. Most gem art we've seen has been decorative or made to recount past events or glorify leaders- all external. Peridot and Lapis jumped straight into the modern/post modern art internal diving pool. If you showed most Europeans circa 1600 some fucking Duchamp, they would probably also think you were ridiculous for calling it art. Hell, contemporaneous people thought it was ridiculous to call it art.
Spoiler: Rose as Pink Diamond talk No real spoilers, but i felt i should be safer this way. I'm still thinking that its possible for Rose to be PD, even after recent revelations because of a few reasons. One is the gem placement (not very compelling, but convenient), and the fact that it has been proven that Rose has a habit of not telling people everything/the truth. Plus, I have a VERY hard time thinking a run of the mill quartz is going to have as many powers as Rose. Healing, Power over plants, basically mind controlling living things, floating, and a shield strong enough to stop homeworld's weapon of mass corruption... i mean she ain't just a run of the mill quartz! The only Quartz abilities we've seen that arent generic gem abilities are the Sanic spin dash that amethyst and jasper like to throw out. I can still see her being PD in "disguise," or at the very least being some VERY special or "highest quality" quartz hand grown by pink diamond or something. I'm also considering a possibility that Pink Diamond's powers could've been absorbed or "passed down" to Rose, one way or another
I have a Tahitian Pearl OC who was designed to be Stronk for her owner just so she'd never get rehomed, because who else would want a strong pearl??? (No one, that's who.) (So, like, she would be hilarious to put in a Pearl Pit Fight.)
Spoiler: Earthlings spoilers I am now thinking about Smoky Quartz and Sardonyx working together and making such terrible puns the whole time. Now that we have more than 3 fusable gems, there can be giant woman teamups! Or giant... person. In Smoky's case.
Spoiler I mean, if it comes down to it, the other Gems do have a grab bag of powers. Pearl can control sand and clouds, make holograms, walk on water... Also we don't know if Rose could step into people's minds either. That might be a new Steven thing.
At this point the Rose being PD theory looks preeeeeetty tinfoil hatty to me. Too convoluted for a show that is ultimately pretty straightforward plotwise. The creators know how to pace a story and dole out information to make those slow reveals really work, instead of bending it into a pretzel to make it unpredictable. (I'm looking at you, Homestuck, and your rampant Lost syndrome.) Witness: we can look at recent revelations and then look back and see how clearly the pieces were set up. The revelations have been guessable with no convoluted logic or out-of-nowhere information involved.
Spoiler: beta @swirlingflight lapis and peridot in beta remind me of norm and pap. a cynical, old, traumatized, snarky person and a young, enthusiastic, eccentric, capslock person with not-so-great/weird social skills.
Spoiler: Rose Quartz theory Actually, I have an idea as to why Rose has those powers. Rose Quartzes are battle medics! Their job is to get to and heal cracked gems during battle before they shatter! Healing powers, floating gives them mobility+a better view of battle, a defensive weapon to protect themselves and their patients, plant powers can be used to create emergency canon fodder as a distraction, and strength to let them carry the big quartzes to safer ground or pull a gem out of rubble. We don't know much about the mind thing yet so I'm setting it aside for now but the other powers more or less fit. And maybe there are just some powers that don't exactly fit a gem's role. Sapphire's a seer but has ice powers for example
Spoiler: More thoughts on above Ooh! And this would make Rose having a sword forged and fighting with it and leading others into battle even more rebellious because those are offensive gem things and she's supposed to be a defender/healer!
yesssssss excellent Brass is just going to run around biting people and refusing to fight in the Pearl Fighting Ring, her owner tolerates that last part because "isn't she just so cute!" and also because she can have Brass bite people she doesn't like and make it look like Brass just doing her thing eventually she probably has to rebel or get shattered, but eh
yes this is good mine still needs a name, but she spends 50% of her time being carried around like a chihuahua in a purse and the other 50% biting basically everyone.
