    Xitaqa Secretly awesome

No case is sufficient protection from the forces of irony. When I had the case open for a few weeks, everything was fine. When I closed it up nice and safe, the next morning my cat climbed on top of the tower and barfed into the top fan -_-

I was pointed this way, having not found a Computer Building Thread before. Thanks, @QuotableRaven!

This is my build so far. It's verging on the painfully expensive, and I probably need to refine my choices, but the website I've been doing it on is excellent! It compares the spec of the things you select with the required specifications of a game, if you so choose. I've got No Man's Sky selected because hype.

Broadly speaking, I want something that can run NMS, and incidentally run all the other games that don't run at all (Skyrim, Magicka), or run unoptimally (Modded Minecraft, Starbound) that I have lying around in my Steam library and elsewhere.

Anyone got any hints, tips or the like? This is the first time I've attempted to assemble a computer, and I'm sure you guys know more about this than I do.

whats your budget for making a pc?

I think I'd be unwilling to spend much more than £800, unless the bonuses of going over-budget are very convincing.

okay, that's 1000 us dollars, which is a pretty good amount to work with. if you didn't know, NewEgg is a good site to buy computer parts from. a few quick things i noticed on that site, the prices it quotes next to the items are wrong, the motherboard was double the price it showed, and that case is way overpriced, you can get a similarly fancy one for much cheaper, freeing up money to use on other components.

If you want a pc with two hard drives, i'm assuming one for the os and one for everything else, i'd change the 120 gig hdd for 120-ish gig ssd, you can load your operating system on the ssd and have your computer boot much faster off of that, and put any programs you use frequently on that drive as well, everything on there will boot much faster than it would off of an hdd.

I don't really like that site, its a good jumping off point for figuring out what you'll need, though I can see several things it doesn't have included in the price. A lot of computer cases will include fans, but they are generally pretty cheap and not that great. They'll be loud, and probably won't move air very well. Replacing them might be a good idea, though its simple enough to do that later, if you don't like them. you'll want a cpu cooler if you're using this for gaming, it'll help improve computer performance. Will you be overclocking your computer?

Oh! http://www.tomshardware.com/ is one of the best places i've found to ask for computer advice, there's someone there who knows Everything.

oh, you've got an atx form factor for your motherboard, for gaming you'll want a mid tower or larger, a mid tower case should be sufficient for you, unless you plan on adding a lot of components.

as a reference, the computer i'm building now cost 1,400 usd, or 1083 pounds according to google.

    [Edit:] Sorry for infodumping.

The images aren't indicative at all - as far as I can tell, the 120 gig drive is a solid-state.

As for the pricing, maybe some of it's getting lost in the transition across the Atlantic. I can certainly find stores that say that the various bits cost as much as this thing says they do. Admittedly, looking on Newegg, I can see a motherboard that looks to be later on in the same series for about £20 less, so what do I know. At least the comparison-with-game-specs feature of the website seems to be functional.

I don't think I'll be overclocking anything, most likely. And no problem for infodumping! This is all information that I, a noob, need.

for newegg, i'd reccommend shopping around for components, and adding ones you like to your wishlist if you have an account, you'll get alerts when they go on sale that way. Its also getting into back to school season, at least here in the u.s and halloween and thanksgiving etc are coming up, so if you wait you might be able to get a pretty great sale.

This site will tell you about any compatibility issues with a build, as well as how to fix them when you're adding parts to the list.

oh, you can ask questions Here if you have a question about building a pc, and also have a reddit account.

Ah, thanks! I think the part picker will go well with pcspecs to root out as many incompatibilities as possible, and I'll also be conferring with someone who makes and designs software for some pretty powerful simulation things when I have a chance. I remain cautiously optimistic.

I return, with an updated build. Turns out the original card I was going for, the Titan X, was far beyond my price range due to some kind of glitch on the original build maker website I was using.

Might change the motherboard to one with a listed price, though. Any suggestions?

is the one i'm using, though you'd need to change your processor to something that uses an lga-2011 v3 socket, instead of the 1150, and you'd need to change out the ram you use as well, since its a ddr4 ram socket instead of a ddr3, and ddr4 ram is still more expensive. The bonus to using the newer motherboards like that is that you'll be able to upgrade longer, rather than what happened to my old pc, which is the motherboard became obsolete, and none of the parts could be reused. you can get a similar unit to that, the extreme-3 for 160 pounds, though based on what its currently saying it would be over your price range, but then its not counting your motherboard at all so, -shrugs-.
