Ah, somehow I'd gotten the impression that Unicron was lesser and Mortilus was equal, so that's why I said what I did! My brain probably just... mixed them up.
The problem is that Mortilus only exists in the IDW continuity, and Unicron seems to exist in every continuity except the IDW one. In IDW, there's the original Primus, who then split into Primus, Mortilus, Solomus, Epistemus and Adaptus. In almost all other continuities, wherever Primus came from also spawned Unicron. From Primus came the Thirteen Primes, and then the continuities all start disagreeing.
They can't be elves though! They swear too much and have relatable emotional problems. An au where the transformers are that one clan of elves that the other elves avoid at parties....wait, weren't the woodelves huge party animals? Nevermind, they'd probanly fit right in. The two leaders split eons ago. There clans now fight bitterly, but they're still married for some reason. Also, transformers are the only race where death by old age is a disease instead of a forgone conclusion.
Considering how much of that first transformers movie is in IDW, I'm surprised that Unicron hasn't shown up yet.

All the blue-and-white mechs are interchangeable for me still unless they have Obviously Weird markers like Riptide's fins, dude, my first thought was actually "Skids" and that only got discarded 'cos Skids has yellow bits I can also only tell Pharma and Ratchet apart when Pharma's making crazy expressions :P ...also, when did Fort Max become the Enforcer? I thought it was. shit whatsisname. The guy with the swords and the zealotry problem.
ooh that was during the extra prose story at the end of #21! starsaber was stabbed in the eye and took off to parts unknown, and rodimus suggested fort max take up the mantle of Ultra Magnus, Duly Appointed Enforcer of the Tyrest Accord, and red alert went with him, and now they are having Adventures also sometimes i forget how many of you guys are robot faceblind :P
ah okay! ...I really need to get my hands on physical copies so I can make an archive of the prose stories, the ones crossposted here are so great and I can't find them online :T Multiple rereads are helping! I can distinguish Drift and Prowl from the medical 'bots now :P ...as long as they're colored. Colors are useful.
Ahhhhh, jealous! >:O I can only tell Mixmaster, and he's constructicon easy mode. I think I've tried to learn them before, but it never stuck. I'm going to have to train harder! But I am pretty stoked that I finally have the combaticons straight. I had no clue for the LONGEST time, but taao has finally straightened me out. Oh, and Fort Max identification! He's got red eyes, which is pretty unique among the white and blue robots, and he's also got dark grey finials on his face that go out sideways and then straight up.

it seems like most people use "god" rather than "primus", like oh god, or oh my god, and only say "primus" when they're talking specifically about primus in a religious conversation! at least, that is the impression i have gotten. the 'everyone saying primus all the time' thing is mostly fanon, i think. it's like how everyone collectively decided that beds/recharge slabs were called 'berths' and optics were never referred to as 'eyes'. the actual writers are a little less concerned with the alien vocab than the fanfic writers are lol

skids, getaway, drift, ratchet is an ambulance, tailgate is kind of a car, arcee is sometimes a car, wheeljack, bumblebee, sideswipe, sunstreaker...... there are definitely more, give me a minute edit: kup is an old-timey car or truck, i can't remember, in SOTW verity's friend whose name i cannot recall turns into a cop car, mirage is a sports car, uhhhh i think bluestreak is a car? hmmmmm
