(I'm mad with power, can you tell? this is, like, my first real tabletop RP experience and it is so worth it. seriously, I am having so much fun. also just in case it wasn't clear asking for advantage was a joke not a serious suggestion also I can stop with the all-caps gloating if you want)

missoyashirou Someone please give me a tiny dog to play with

This is probably a dumb question, but what do I roll for Charisma in this version of the game? Just d20+Cha modifier? Also, how do the skills work, is it d20+Mod+level or something like that?

Edit: Did the roll, and got 15+2 (cha mod), so Lyriae's got me beat here. Congrats!

Also, as another aside, I finally found a character creator that is applicable to making orcs and half-orcs! I know this is the Gemsona creator, but it works pretty well for making cuteish orcs as well, so that was still a solid there.

d20 + Charisma modifier + any applicable proficiencies! so if you're proficient in Persuasion checks, that'd be +3, since at 5th level that's your proficiency bonus. (Lyriae happens to have x2 proficiency in Persuasion. thanks, rogue feats!)

@esotericPrognosticator I'm glad to hear you're having fun! (Seriously, I'm a writer, validation is basically cocaine. Half the reason I DM is because of the immediacy and engagement of the audience)

@missoyashirou d20+Cha mod. Skills are d20+ability mod+proficiency mod (if proficient). Basically what eP said.

aww, what a cute! lookit her lil freckles! and her nose! :3

non-topical edit so as to not doublepost: can I just say, @The Frood Abides, that I'm really enjoying how... well, this is not the best way to put this, but how gay the setting is? like, our party meets a magical painting lady, three female(ish, in Liron's case) members of the party hit on her in the space of several minutes, and she is totally cool with and possibly into it. that's really nice, and not something you see super often. just out of curiosity, was Chanterelle's sexual orientation mentioned in your materials (I know you said the Medusa was canonically bi), or did you just make it up on the fly?

An interesting question. My answer will necessarily remain vague to avoid spoilers. It's not that the Medusa has "bisexual" in her statblock. Rather, the adventure mentions NPCs' love interests, whether of the same gender or of a different gender, in the same matter-of-fact way. Disapproval, where it exists, is framed as a matter of personal jealousy rather than homophobia. The implied assumption is that it ain't no thing. Chanterelle has no canon orientation. I decided to roll with it.
Also, in the D&D chatter thread right before I got this idea, a number of people were talking about how they were uncomfortable in groups where "cishet dude" was the assumed norm and any deviation was isolating at best. I may be the only cishet dude in this group. "Know your audience."

I go to work soon so I can't focus enough to post for a few hours, but Sarnai is gonna be torn between watching the flirtation party and going "only three hours? That's not enough, we have to explore this! :( :("

You know, I never thought to ask which world we're set in. The adventure is in the painting, so it's not especially relevant. But when characters swear, which god(s) do they swear by...?

I've avoided addressing that question because none of you played clerics. :P That said, there are a ton of references to Smith and Stuart's other works scattered through this adventure. So Vorn (grim grey god of iron, rain, and retribution) would work, or you could invent your own. There are a lot of different gods.

    Edit: Like Conchodeus and Zoophoria.

@The Frood Abides would you mind describing the safe house we're in in a little more detail than, well, just calling it a "safe house"? like, what's the setup/layout, do we have any supplies stashed, where are we gonna sleep, how long were we planning to lie low, that sort of thing.

    Sure.

I figure you can decide what inventory supplies are on your person and what you have stashed in the safehouse -- most of you have a fair amount of rations, for example, and it's unlikely you'd have carried those into the heist.

As for the setup: One of you knows a guy. You decide which. He used to be a smuggler (or still is), and he gave you the key to a sturdy one-story farmhouse on the outskirts of a town mainly known for fish and fish byproducts.
The house really only has the one bed, but it's pretty big, and the floor by the hearth is spacious. Kitchen, bedroom, main room, and cellar, basically. Outhouse and tool shed out back. You can decide the fine details of the layout for RP purposes.
Your guy's pretty easygoing about guests as long as they don't fuck with his shit, but if you're still there when he gets back, he might start charging rent. Up to you how long you planned to lie low.

hrm. yeah, I doubt Lyriae'd have most of her shit on her during the heist—for unencumbered movement, avoiding inopportune rattling, etc. do you want a list of what's in the house and what's on her person, or can we be a bit more casual about it? also, out of the party I think Lyriae is probably most likely to know a... fish?... smuggler, unless someone else's academic career was unexpectedly exciting. if anyone wants to sketch out the house layout, that'd be great; I'd do it, but I don't have any sort of digital art program set up, and I doubt y'all want to use a shitty phone photo of a pencil sketch. when's our guy projected to get back? also, does anyone have time-period-of-laying-low suggestions?

Oooh. The safehouse as a place for keeping supplies that normally only traveling adventurers would have in their packs is an A+ idea, I like it.

And I'm now imagining our smuggler is Bard via the movies. Smuggling dwarves in fish barrels, and cranky as hell at guests who overstay their welcome.

@esotericPrognosticator no need for a list, I figure if you leave the house on an expedition you'll gather the stuff first.

Edit: Guy comes back in two weeks, maybe? This is not meant to be a part of the adventure that inconveniences you, so w/e.

So The False Chanterelle without Chanterelle is... The False.

If they do put a still life in the painting, they should make sure they're fake flowers. Just for that little extra touch.

@esotericPrognosticator , Lyriae is the only one of the group with proficiency in Insight. Most of us are a little better than average Wis-wise, besides poor what happens if I touch the painting Alabaster, but none of us are trained in it. :')

um, I'm having trouble deciphering what you're responding to here. 'splain, please? (although I agree that Lyriae is probably the Bastion of Common Sense in this particular party. poor Lyriae.)

Oops, it would help if I say how that observation is relevant to anything. Basically I (ooc) am amusing myself with thoughts like "What if Chanterelle isn't the damsel in distress she seems to be, and is hoping to trick us into the painting to trap us there?" (I think it unlikely, since she specifically warned us away from the dangerous Medusa, and gave us advice on a potential safe source of information if we go exploring.) BUT, since I humored the thought, I decided to see who in the party was likely to pick up on signs of trickery like that.

oh, yeah, that makes a lot more sense! ...although Lyriae's attraction to Chanterelle might make her less likely to want to figure out if she's lying. that's kinda irrelevant, though, seeing as Lyriae is a mistrustful bastard who is gonna check her six regardless of whether she wants to. (tbh I'm worried I won't be paranoid enough to play Lyriae as she should be played, and I'm fairly damn paranoid.) but, uh, I don't Chanterelle would have to trick the party to get most of us into the painting. Alabaster's already in there, and I bet Sarnai and Liron would both gladly hop in too. oh god, we're totally fucked if anything dangerous is of academic interest, aren't we.
