    Absolutely.

Purely incidentally, nobody should ever have to take any damage here, but fighting is still somewhat alarming because it is much harder to remember that you needn't feel pain once you've already begun feeling it, and if you're not used to liminal spaces, you might forget that you don't have to be damaged in them when somebody hits you by surprise.

Logically, I understand that pain is not... hm, required? A natural consequence? here, but... Well. It's one thing to know that while I'm calm and rational, and quite another to remember to take advantage of that particular unnatural law in the rush of combat. (...and a third entirely for those who fight because they want to get hurt.)

Alterations here seem, from my point, to be a bonding of will and belief. (I think we discussed something similar while trying to extricate Cronus from his contract with Genie?) And... even if we don't want to be hurt, with the possible exception of Bit my crewmates believe pain will always follow a blow. It's an ingrained response, and one not likely to change unless something happens to majorly alter our minds. Does this fit with Valiska+'s knowledge of this dreamscape? I willingly admit you seem to have much more practice and experience here.

Belief is the problem to which knowledge is the answer.

That's awfully trite, but--we use the term "believe" to refer to things we regard as true, even in the absence of proof. I don't say that I believe Valiska loves me, because I know it to be true. But I believe in supersymmetry, even though they haven't found all the particles in any universe I've ever lived in.

Frequently, belief functions as a barrier to knowledge. If you believe that G-d sends us illnesses because we sin, it is hard to accept germ theory. If you believe that we were created from dust, it's hard to accept evolution.

You believe pain will always follow a blow, but here it is not true. You have to allow your body to perceive reality.

Hey, you don't get to call other people your twin. I put up with you callin' your boyfriend our cousin before you were willing to admit that he was your boyfriend but that troll ain't your twin.

It would probably help, Stanford, if you explained that the body you have in a dreamscape isn't your actual physical body, but rather a mental approximation thereof that you imagine around your consciousness because your consciousness is used to wearing a body. Just like you imagine your body wearing clothes, because it's used to that.

    *ignores Stan's comment*

    Well. That's... strange. *smiles slightly*

Congratulations. Your pajamas are quite something!

(Although this may seem sarcastic, Sev is being quite sincere, and actually grinning.)

Huh! I mean, I knew that, I just hadn't thought about it much. So...

*looks curiously at his left hand. Yup, that's definitely a hand.*

...guess I'm still not quite used to that after all. I wonder when that will change? (I wonder if I still have the enhanced-level reflexes without thinking about it, since those are very much "muscle" memory by now.)

*shrinks down to normal size* I think overall I like being the size that I normally am, except when I'm trying to steal kisses from you.

Or get things off high shelves when neither of you is around.

Hmmm. Why didn't I notice? I never knew you before you had your hand replaced.

I have also enjoyed speaking with you (and others!) here, even when I have accidentally made others wary. *looks uncertain*

That's odd. It may just be a semantic difference, or a genuine difference of the metaphysical rules of our planes, but belief frequently causes things to become true in my world. And I've certainly been maintaining my image here through believing that I look like... well, like this.

You are quite good the size you are. As for my hand... *shrugs* I apparently forget about it too?

Wear the clothes that make you happy, and fuck anyone who thinks you should do otherwise, honestly.

If you can convince yourself that something is true, to the point where it becomes knowledge rather than belief despite your lack of proof, sometimes you can change reality in our world, too. But at that point you are essentially willing the thing to be true...and it usually works best in situations where multiple outcomes are possible, and you are willing the wave to collapse the way you want it to.

Most of the time, however, people who insist on believing things that aren't true in material worlds just delude themselves. Like people who insist that the planets they live on are flat, or that evolution didn't take place. It's one thing to will that someone who is ill won't die, or to will that someone will send you money when you desperately need some, and another thing entirely to will the universe into a different shape.
