At many Earthish universities there are societies of young men who wear Greek letters so that they can recognise one another. It has the added benefit of allowing the rest of us to recognise and avoid them.

...a social circle? I'm not sure what in that clip indicates immaturity, beyond the very poor attempts at deception and ignoring the wishes of the one groupmember. If severe consequences are imminent, why not make the interim as pleasant as possible?

Hm. Group markers could be useful for many reasons, though how to apply them to plating in any permanent manner...

They're bein' chastised for neglectin' the education they're payin' for in favor a' drinkin' an' chasin' femmes. Earth tends t' think a' that kinda behavior as neglectin' responsibility, therefore immature. Now, me, I'm fine with drinkin' hard as long as y'don't screw up what y'need t' do. No drinkin' on the job. Earth don't take well to partyin' too hard, though, I guess.

Think they got kinda a reputation for harassment, too, which ain't so fun.

A symbol they choose to wear, though, not one they're born with, the way you were born with yours.

... well, they're allowed and encouraged to wear those Greek letters, even though they don't own the Greek letters, per se. The Greeks own the Greek letters, or the school does, and neither of those wanna stop people from wearing them.

That clip's a work of fiction.

But if it were a documentary, it could've been filmed at the school I attended long ago.

Ah. The clarification is appreciated, thanks.

...if they have a reputation for harassment, why don't those who've had enough of their behavior form an alliance long enough to either scatter or eliminate them? Or are they the majority?

How does being fiction, apparently realistic fiction, negate the clip's use as an example?

Well enough-- still functional, at any rate, and learning new things! How is Eliana?

There is nothing wrong with partying. My graduate students party like soldiers, I'm told; then again, many of their elder sisters and brothers--and a few of them--were soldiers more recently than I care to think about.

However, the young men in these fraternities party like idiots. They go through degrading rituals to join these societies, and occasionally one of them dies in the process. They encourage each other to drink well past the point of pleasant intoxication and into stupor. And some of them known to encourage young women to drink until their judgement is clouded (and sometimes into an actual stupor) in order to obtain false consent for sexual activities, but it is difficult to stop them because it is hard to get anyone to step forward and name names, as the victims are so thoroughly humiliated and so many less compassionate people are known to blame them for going to these parties in all innocence.

If anyone in my program behaved like that I would boot them out of it and report them to the authorities, but Panarcanium doesn't tolerate this kind of business.

Ah, really? They're a recurring problem, then?

...what's a slasher film? (I assume "films" is plural, please pardon the grammatical oddity if it's not.)

They're documentaries about the depravities of particularly bad sororities and fraternities, except the film-makers kill them all, except for one 'final girl' who is allowed to live because she was the least terrible. This serves to keep frats and sororities in line.

Of course... Fiddleford and I did make short work of them after they tried to mess with us.
