"That's one of the oldest questions in the multiverse, sweetling." Valiska sighs. "There are a lot of reasons. Sometimes people who are hurting do things that hurt other people because they're in pain and they can't think. Some people lose the ability to care about other people while they're growing up, but we won't let that happen to you. Sometimes people are ignorant and think that they're helping when they're hurting. And then there's the individual they were discussing, who comes from an entirely different place in the multiverse where things work differently. He lost the ability to care for people long ago, but on top of that, he comes from a place where the things that hurt you and me are not the same as the things that can hurt him or others of his kind."

"And also my brother-in-law," Valiska points out. "Who prefers to do homicides one at a time, and not at all if he can avoid it."

"Nothing, that's the sort of thing deities ought to say." Valiska grins at Life Support and shrugs.

Valiska beams at the big metal kit. "Of course I do, but be careful! I'm much smaller than you."

"Yes, but I'm married twice over, dear."
