ooh. possibly not human, I like, just because loony and old makes me think hogwarts...
(what if it's the eldritch horror)

yeah I don't want them to be literally Dumbledore.
    Right now my votes
-the eldritch horror, because fuck yes, and also that would screw with the skeptical kids and the transfer students even more
-Someone who's very no-nonsense and to the point and kind of earthy, but who is viciously protective of their students and faculty and willing to stand up to anything for them.

i might do a proper writeup on the dorms later once i've eaten and had my meds and stuff, but i have socials scheduled and might not get to it. if someone else wants to do it, here is some art i was thinking to use:

    [IMG] bear

How much would hogwarts sterotypes be mirrored in SCA? Like, would coyote be percieved to be full of dark wixen and such?

Poking my head in here again to say that this picture appears to be of Raven stealing the Sun which is a kickass myth (PNW, not Southwest, though) and which you should definitely do something with with Raven house.

How about a no-nonsense eldtrich horror?

A no-nonsense eldritch horror in vaguely-human form of indeterminate gender, with a face that constantly rearranges itself during conversation. Maybe less 'hands on' with the student body than Dumbledore; most student activities are handled by teaching staff and the headmaster handles the background stuff. Still protective of the student body though. In fact, that may be the reason for its withdrawal. It knows it's creepy as fuck and can't keep a properly human form so it stays out of sight unless Hogwarts-level shit is going down or its presence is otherwise absolutely necessary (it does of course attend the major events, but it doesn't give speeches like Dumbledore or sit in pride of place. Maybe it has its own table off in the corner where it watches proceedings from a polite distance).

It's closer with the local students, because their constant exposure to weird gives them some buffer against the brain melt.

I would say: probably, but also because coyote is such a trickster figure. he may not mean bad, but it turns out that way, especially because there's a streak of self serving ambition running through many coyotes. if it benefits others; good, but a lot of times it becomes a back and forth ethics balance thing.

I imagine it's also obscenely polite. You cannot ruffle it. It has watched stars from birth to death. It waited an amount of time that can only be expressed in scientific notation to become flesh in this world. Its patience for those under its protection is infinite.

Those that wish harm on the other hand... well. Splat.

(Mostly because nearly all ancient eldritch abominations tend to be real touchy for being, y'know, ancient. Newbie cultist mispronounces your name? Entire city wiped retroactively wiped from existence. Shit, need new cultists. That's gonna set you back a few centuries.)

i wasn't able to find all southwestern art with a quick search, mainly because the relevant search terms are cluttered up with mass-produced home decor from the 90's. :P

northwestern mythos can totally be relevant, though; the magical traditions are probably intimately interrelated.

I like this idea better than the face. I like this idea a lot.

i would think a lot of the wand less magic comes from interaction with the native populations?
i'm not well verse on American indian/first nations mythos though.

It's probably used to it. Gives a head pat and waves them off. In all likelihood it's been Headmaster since shortly after the school was founded.

    or since the founding itself.
if this is in nightvale universe, would strexcorps have tried anything with the school?

It's in adjacent-to-Nightvaleverse, but if they did... well, it's run/guarded by an eldritch abomination fiercely protective of the school and its population. I imagine the first helicopter to fly over it was politely returned... in a geometrically perfect sphere of metal and the flesh of its pilot. As were any subsequent attempts, in increasingly non-euclidean shapes, and the whole thing was dubbed too costly to continue.

Since not everyone is in the nightvale fandom I think bringing them in might be a bad idea? I dunno.

that's what I meant to add.
just as an example of it being fiercely protective.
    does it speak?
