Personally i kinda like a lot of body horror, at least the kind with, like. Too many eyes or things in the wrong place or stuff that looks like its just a bit off in ways that makes your brain scream. As far as gorey body horror i dont really care much one way or another about it. That said, there is some stuff that gets me. Its usually more subtle things, like cuttlefish eyes or maned wolf legs. Stuff that most actually wouldnt count as body horror probably.
too many eyes is wonderful the only body horror that freaks me out isn't techincally body horror. pregnancy freaks me the fuck out.
oh shit man, EM CARROLL IS SO CHOICE anyone who hasn't read her comics yet: you are missing out, my friends
body horror can be somewhat hit or miss for me. sometimes it's just pretty to look at. sometimes it's really funny. my favorite kind has to be where people are just fuckin' part of the architecture in horrifying and almost organic ways. the veinier the better/worse. or the gut punch moment when you realize a monster used to be human i still really love hp lovecrafts work even though now im like "eeeh" on most of his stuff. but i think it's a whole bunch of amazing stuff to work off the back of and honestly I can appreciate "theres an eldritch, terrifying god of flesh and terror that's allergic to cats" no matter the writer.
I just want to snap them. With like my bare hands. Or just take a bat to them. You upset me long legged animal. YOU UPSET ME.
For me some body horror stuff is just silly and some is GOD NO GET IT AWAY Human teeth where human teeth shouldn't be is a pretty consistent NOPE button, though. For example: some of this guy's rocks-with-teeth sculptures (although it appears he's done a couple with sillier smiles, which kind of help Riddikulus it), the pacu, this skull full of teeth, teratoma (not even going to link to an image search for this one because FUCK NO). Also there was a point-n-click game in the mid-90s called The Dark Eye, based on a few Edgar Allan Poe stories. Most of the graphics were done with stop-motion puppets, and the part of the "Berenice" level where Egaeus starts tripping out on Berenice's teeth is ...unnerving.
horrified shuddering over teeth not being where they're supposed to be. monstrous teeth? sure cool. teratomas??? nnnNOOPPE also i remembered a short story that's been eluding me for like a year. it was about this virus that made your bones go soft and useless and some of the imagery was Really Horrible. i think there was one person with whom the virus had spread to their entire body so they were just. flesh. AUGH. no thank you.
There's this one anti-smoking commercial where the kid pulls a tooth out the side of his face and it's just D8
Ive seen that one and ones like it and they are just Too Over The Top. That and the monster ones just end up looking awesome instead of horrible to me
God, that one with the face tearing is stupid though. Its like, you want cigarettes ok thats great but first i nEED SOME OF YOUR FACE JUST TEAR IT OFF LIKE IT'S NOTHING
RIGHT? I always imagine her poor store manager looking in the till, sighing, and going "human flesh is STILL not currency, Cheryl! what am I supposed to tell the bank?!" I may have overthought this anti-smoking ad.
So I decided to watch the new Blair Witch today instead of tomorrow because tomorrow the only time showing is 10:35 pm and I am too old and tired for that shit. Here are some key notes! cheap ass jump scares decent acting sometimes annoying sob/cry/whine/screams some great moments of atmosphere so many jump scares more a sequel than a reboot nearly every character is pretty likable no shoehorned romance at the eleventh hour more special effects than the original All told I give it a solid 7.
For me there's nothing scary that isn't fun for me in media. If I'm scared by it, I like it! OH ALSO apparently there's a movie coming out next year about the dangerous evil of OUIJA BOARDS and it looks kinda cheesy, kinda good, so I'll watch it. But I am not looking forward to peeps on tumblr lecturing others about "messing around with the spirit world" and whatever. If you want to believe a board game made in a factory can summon demons, good for you. I don't. Get off my lawn.
i really like the, uh... the zozo stuff? that shit is A+ the ghost adventures episode about it is my fave
