...the universe probably doesn't care. I highly doubt it's sapient enough to care. But if enough people care-- we can change. Our world can change. It will probably be painful, and take a long time, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. And the people who are staying in Iacon-- most of them want to see that change, make that change too, I think. They wouldn't be staying otherwise, not with the colonies opening up.

...but then, what do I know about politics? I'm just a naive little deserter.

You might be right. Unfortunately, the people in power don´t care in my experience. Makes change a bit difficult when you´re doing it alone.

'Difficult' is not 'impossible'. And I refuse to give up on our society as a whole just because things are hard. We've dealt with hard, and this time I'd like to think we're at least doing a little better than the functionists. Even a small step forward is something. We have time. We don't need to pull miracles out of our tailpipes.

I admire your optimism. In my experience, pulling miracles out of my tailpipes is exactly what I´m expected to do.
But what do I know, I´m just a cynical old Ex-con.

Don´t get me wrong I like your point of view, I just haven´t been able to believe in it for a long time. Regardless i don´t think there´s much point in us arguing about it.
