hrm. on second thought I think Lyriae would be much more concerned with cloak person than she would be with harvesting acid. Lyriae's like 60 ft from Cloaky, right? what's earshot range for a half-elf with +6 Perception proficiency? earshot for hearing muttering would be preferable, but if you could give me a range for normal talking volume that'd be great too. also, what kind of cover is there in the corridor/near the corridor entrance?

3.5's simulationist baggage is sometimes useful when you don't know off the top of your head how the real world works. Having consulted the SRD Listen rules, you can definitely hear the person with a successful Perception roll. What languages does Lyriae speak?

Cover's not great. It's pretty open-plan. There are shadows everywhere, cast from the weird baroque ceiling lamps, but that's no help if you're hiding from someone with darkvision.

oh, she can hear them from where she is already? great! I was planning on rolling for Stealth and getting close enough to eavesdrop, but if she can hear from where she is I'll hold off on the Stealth roll. (also, idk how generous you are about successful stealthing; my only experience with it is through Critical Role, which is 5e, but the DM lets the players get away with some crazy shit with high enough Stealth rolls.) and as for languages, I could've sworn I put them on her character sheet—I definitely picked them out—but, uh, apparently I didn't. goddammit, Past Me. >:( her race says she gets Elvish, Common, and one other; I picked Undercommon, but since it's exotic that is of course dependent on your approval. also thieves' cant, although I'm not sure if that counts as a language per se. and I think some backgrounds give you an extra language or two, but since Lyriae's is custom I guess whether or not she gets any is up to you. also, would she be able to identify languages she doesn't speak—like, hear Dwarvish and know it's Dwarvish—or is the assumption that she hasn't even heard any other languages?

as far as i can tell, every background gives: +2 skill proficiencies, +2 tool/language proficiencies, and a feature. if you didn't nab any tool proficiencies (like herbalist kit, poison kit, musical instrument, artisans' tools, etc) then you'd have 2 languages available. if you got two tool proficiencies, then no languages for you.

@esotericPrognosticator I'll approve Undercommon. Lyriae might not realize where the weird fucked-up trade pidgin of sewer and cave originated, but she's haggled with enough goblins and suspicious hooded figures to get by in it. She's probably heard common languages: so she could identify Dwarvish, but not Primordial.

And you will need to roll high on Perception to hear her from where Lyriae's standing.

@The Frood Abides should I just post a Perception roll result in this thread, or should I make an IC post?

Just posting your result here is fine. I'll let you know if you make it out or if you have to sneak closer.

welp. rolled my first ever nat 20! :D +3 proficiency, if that's relevant. I guess Lyriae's ears have been... sharpened by the sounds of battle...

    So that's a total of 26?

You hear a low, possibly feminine voice muttering something in... Draconic?

actually I was wrong about Perception being one of my Expertise proficiencies, so it'd be 23, actually. but I'm guessing Lyriae would hear the same thing anyway?

Oh hey Alabaster knows draconic, you should give them a heads-up.

@Wiwaxia ye I was thinking the same thing! although I think Liron speaks Draconic too, and she also has proficiency in Perception checks, so she'd be less likely to have to go clomping down the passage. @thegrimsqueaker have I got my facts straight?

yeah, I set the DC at 21. Liron's also got Draconic, because wizard. I don't think anyone else does.

I can help with Dwarven, not Draconic. They both start with d and like collecting gold/gems, practically the same thing.

By the way, if for any length of time you're busy, ill, or don't have spoons for posting at least once a week, please let me know and I will stop @ing you. This is just in case the game has slipped your mind.
