Ford pats the couch and nods to Dipper; when the boy comes over and sits, he puts his arm around Dipper's shoulders.

"Her long-term memories may eventually return, particularly with those friends of hers helping out. Fiddleford broke down a lot of his personality, I'm told, but he did it with repetitive exposures--a lot of them in a fairly short time, initially. And even so, he got it back. Generally, you can only completely erase things that have happened since the last time that person slept. Fortunately, the connection between her and Bill has been erased on both sides. He may remember her some day, just as he may return to the rave, but by then he'll be distracted, because he's made of chaos, boredom and spite."

 

"I don't know. He seems pretty fixated on you." Dipper frowns.

"I'm the one that got away," says Ford. "Bill can't love, but he feels some sort of obsessive attachment to me. I don't know what to do about that, but I am pretty sure that he was not that impressed with Itch."

 

"Our son saved her life. And also yours," Valiska says, staring right into his eyes with her ears set back. She is a life-long huntress, a trained assassin, and he is barely a predator at all, more than content to scavenge the kills of people like Itch. Her fangs show slightly when she smiles, and lets him see the cat behind the slitted pupils of her violet eyes, the cat who sees the veins and arteries that course through his throat.

*His breath catches in his throat and he looks away.*

"We made her forget her encounter with the demon. For a little while, she won't remember anything at all. After several hours her memories will begin to return, particularly if you help her to remember. But she won't remember today. And she should not remember today," Valiska says, more gently. "The demon would have destroyed your world and made her the least member of his entourage, a toy for the others. You would have died the moment you ceased to amuse them."

"She will remember," Valiska says quietly. "Just tell her. Talk to her about things you have done together. The memories will return. We saved your lives."

Does the gun think he wasn't willing to kill the girl before, if he had to? He didn't want to--after all, he's glad that neither he nor Sunshine are dead, though he has to admit that neither he nor Sunshine were tempted by power and cruelty. But he would have, to save them all. Or Valiska or Jame would have done it, but he wouldn't have argued the matter.
