i am lucky to have such awesome housemates. Although since most of the furniture in the house is black, and most of our personal items are black, it can take quite a while to find anything if you forget where you left it.

Oh my god, doing laundry is a nightmare.

Where's that black shirt? Oh there it is, no, wait, that's some pants. Is this...? Nope, a different shirt. Maybe THIS -- nope, same pants again. Shit.

I've never quite had the chutzpah to go full goth, although I definitely like heading in that direction especially with lolita (although so much gothloli brand has random crosses on it and Do Not Want). One of my partners was pretty deep into the subculture in their twenties and while they don't do it so much anymore they are still very into the music scene, which is quite fun :D
On the subject of music, has everyone heard this song? From an all-around pretty great band but this song is just so deeply amusing. (Formerly Thou Shalt Not, singer is now part of Seeming)

That room is so cool!! I wish I could have something nice like that here in my apartment, but it's sort of hard when I have the worst sense of decoration and also goth isn't exactly popular in Brazil.

I always liked the spoopy and the creepy, since I was little - I was very into supernatural/occult/witchy stuff and the MOMENT I found out Halloween was a thing I wanted thematic birthday parties (I was actually born in October 31st!)

I'm a baby goth and evanescence and nightwish were the bands of my people. I also listened to a whole ducking lot of Blackmore's night and Emilie Autumn during HS, and since I'm also a huge medieval fantasy nerd i feel it sort of makes me a renfaire goth :P my dream home takes a lot of inspiration from Actual Gothic Architecture.

But the Victorian aesthetic is also wonderful.

I never liked horror movies and that makes me feel very weirdly out of place. I like suspense and creepy/spooky/mystical stuff, but a lot of horror is just... Not appealing? I think I'm in the more romantic stuff, the sweeping drama instead of the shitty slasher movies. Even my Vampire: The Masquerade stuff was more focused on the Tragic Drama than in combat and action.

@witchknights one thing I've learned over my ancient years is there's all kinds of goth! Romantic goth is definitely a genre, and I'm there with you too.

Of course I'm one of those people who like spooky creepy stuff on one hand, and disney princess fairytale cute girliness on the other. Took me a long ass time to realize I didn't have to abandon one to love the other!

There's no wrong way to goth, my friends.

Thanks!! I am too brainweirds to focus on one musical style *side eyes the whole lot of Jpop from the weeaboo years* but Blackmore's night never left my writing inspo folder and EA's Opheliac holds a very special place in my heart.
But yeah! Romantic goth is definitely a style goal, even if the aesthetic is kinda ruined by my enormous love for every shade of blue. It's just sort of disheartening when the goths around me irl are allllll about slasher movies and violent/gorey stuff like that when what I really want to do is sip shitty wine out of a black crystal wineglass while reclining on a black lace covered... Recliner thing... And make vague pleased noises at Crimson Peak's general direction, while reading the kind of novels Austen made fun of in Northanger Abbey.

    Well said!

Ha! You are my kind of person! If geography weren't a thing I would love to sip shitty wine with you and talk Crimson Peak and ridiculous Bronteesque novels!

I found one of the old classics, the Tomagothi webpage! Tomagothis were an imaginary digital pet that would let you raise your own babybat to become one of the many diffferent kinds of goths. (someone eventually made a downloadable version, but i'd be astonished if the program could still be found anywhere)

The silliness begins here, click on the gifs to navigate.

My gothy ideal is basically to go to a lot of shows and dance like crazy while looking intimidatingly attractive in too much eyeliner and Big Black Boots. And be surrounded by reminders life's brevity and celebrate transgressing against society's fear-based mores and shit. I wanna have beautifully preserved dead stuff and occult books in my home. I wanna party like it's 1989. Essentially I wanna be Lestat in the opening chapters of Queen of the Damned.

Where the fuck is Morven and how was this not something'd by her.

I meanwhile was raised by a goth. So my idea of cheering up is sobbing angrily in a corner while listening to Bela Lugosi's Dead on repeat for an hour. Halloween was also the most magical of holidays because my mother took decorating seriously as fuck.

I don't do crosses ever. Or skulls, sorry :) There is a tiny cross in the AP logo on my bat bag and Putumayo's Cat Window print has the cat wearing a cross and that's the most cross there is in my wardrobe, I do not buy things that have crosses as a big obvious motif.

I like bats and cats and occult symbology, but my Sephardi family of choice would have fits if I ever wore a cross.

Basically I have a great love of lace and frills and everything from renaissance to baroque to victorian to about the 1950s. Like every other lolita pinup on earth.

I've never gotten the cross aesthetic. It just... it symbolizes a thing that I don't want to symbolize. I mean i guess dying a torturous death and rising from the dead is pretty goth, or at least moderately metal, but it's kind of a nope for me.

Ankhs I can get behind. It's very easy to gothify an ankh (in the gothic architectural/art style sense), and it symbolizes a thing that is a Thing, even outside the context of the original religious tradition. (I know there are those who would call it appropriation, but the fact is it's been long since appropriated, and the meaning and context of the ankh is pretty direct, so I honestly dont think it loses anything in translation; but I suppose i'd be just the sort of person not to know?)

I've been in the scene since the late 80s, really, and between 1998 and 2005 my partner Alana and I did a goth radio show on the public radio station KUCI 88.9FM in Irvine, CA. Alana's had Voltaire flirt with her :) and we helped him avoid some of his more stalkery fans at Disneyland's goth day ... quite a few years ago.

I´m a goth, Ißve never worn a cross in my life. While itßs in the aestethic a lot, it Can be avoided.

No crosses for me, either. I know goths who wear defaced crosses instead, too.

i am in favor of vampires that turn into crows instead of bats. Or like a vampire that turns into a whole murder of crows, like Viggo Mortensen in the Prophecy.
