That's me in the late 90s or early 2000s, but not a great photo. There are better somewhere. I wish I still had that hair.
No turning into a crow for me. Only wolf transformation, thank you. The corvids though. They lead me to places and give me fine info and sometimes just troll me because they are assholes. Helpful assholes though. BROS. HONORABLE SCAVENGERS. GASP VINTAGE MORVEN
And now I again ponder the idea of somehow mixing the Western aesthetic with the gothic aesthetic. They're both very death centric and morbid. THE WESTERN.
This is from June 2000 when I was reading cards at a goth club. The thing that looks vaguely crosslike is actually a sword pendant
Check out the Fields of the Nephilim, they totally went for that postapocalyptic West look. Or the bands Myssouri or Antic Clay (basically, same singer different musicians) that should totally be the soundtrack to a gothic Western if you're leaning more towards western than gothic.
i'm not fashionable enough to go full goth nor do i like horror (because i am Easily Frightened) but once i drew a cat with no neck and a floating cube for a head does that fit the aesthetic? although, i do own a couple of Long Black Coats........
has anyone bought anything from goodgoth? it looks like it has an okay selection of plus sizes and a lot of them are very #aesthetic so i'm considering maybe nabbing some stuff later the reviews seem pretty good but personal experience can't hurt :p
your partner is way cooler than I originally gave her credit for and I apologize Also this is not technically me in goth makeup but it is still an aesthetic I would like to emulate more often in my gothy looks (from that time I was an evil spirit in The Tempest, the costume's color scheme was a royal purple but this light was veeery red)
@Aondeug Goth Western is totally a thing, somewhere around the Nick Cave/Johnny Cash area. Hell, Johnny Cash even did a cover of one of Nick Cave's songs. I spent a good chunk of my teens and twenties as the angriest stompiest little gothlet and retain a great fondness for the aesthetic even if I don't have so much energy for putting into looks and decoration lately. The Detroit gothic scene, or at least the part of it I hung out around, was less Classic Gothic and more gothic-industrial, by which I mostly mean we wore all black with stompy boots and leather jackets and listened to industrial and EBM. But yeah! Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees were hugely formative parts of my high school years, along with the Crow soundtrack and like... EN and Skinny Puppy. supercloseted!babytrans!me justified buying makeup and fishnets as a Goth thing, too, so there's definitely that. Gothic Western! *insert sunbleached longhorn skull* Johnny Cash - Man In Black Johnny Cash - Ghost Riders in the Sky Johnny Cash (Nick Cave cover) - The Mercy Seat Nick Cave - Up Jumped The Devil Nick Cave - Tupelo The Goddamn Gallows - Seven Devils The Builders and the Butchers - Bringin' Home The Rain 16 Horsepower (CCR cover) - Bad Moon Rising Highlonesome - Devil At The Door But yes, there's something very Gothic about the American south and west. The blues mythology of the devil at the crossroads, the cow skull bleaching in the pitiless burning sun, the ghost town, the hell-and-damnation preacher man, the reckless gambler with the dead man's hand, all set in a land whose closets are full of the skeletons of the locals it was stolen from and the slaves who built it? Goth as fuck.
When I was 15-16, a schoolmate in my art class loaned me Switchblade Symphony's Bread and Jam for Francis. And that was like... An awakening for me. She put this whole... Thing, to stuff I'd always felt and loved... Plus she was SO COOL with that 90s Goth aesthetic, all velvet dresses and platform leather boots, and took black and white photos of snake skeletons and graveyards and fuck I wanted to be like that. I couldn't be because I grew up in a rural Bible belt town of 1500 people and you went to school with the same kids for 13 years, so nobody was allowed to change, be different or weird. (aka non redneck) (she wasn't from there lol) I still remember buying this shitty little pleather collar from Hot Topic... It didn't even buckle, it snapped lol. I wore it to school and got shit for it aaaaall day long. So I just kept all that to myself and never expressed it outwardly. Shame. I do a bit more these days... but I still don't wear as much leather and eyeliner as I want to. But I do consider myself a ..lover of the Gothic lifestyle. She was the first kid at my school to get a tongue ring too, iirc.
...defaced crosses, you say? Defaced how? (Presumably not inverted, because, y'know, humility symbol and so on)
Here in the US, where the dominant flavor of Christianity is evangelical and Satanism is a state-recognized faith, the original meaning of St Peter's Cross is largely forgotten and the inverted cross is largely taken to mean an inversion of Christian values. So that is a thing I have seen from time to time. (I have also seen inverted ankh used to represent the perversion of life, i.e. undeath, although I think that was started by Vampire: the Masquerade)
Yeah, I know people usually take it that way, I just feel like "defaced" has different connotations and "inverted" doesn't quite match them. *shrug* @Morven?
@cryptoThelematrix i am lukewarm about crosses in fashion (raised Catholic; my objection to it is that people might think I'm religious), but religious imagery is such a soft spot for me. Two of my dream dresses are the stained glass and Gloria AaTP prints (Gloria is very religious imagery-y but it's like a stained glass window! There's a blue colorway!), and I have a Krad Lanrette Mozarabic Chant skirt that I bought and got it altered even if I have no idea how to match it with anything on my wardrobe
whoever mentioned Opheliac and Blackmore's Night, I love you. i'm gonna say yeah, probably a vampire the masquerade thing. nwod is more fun in my opinion and geist is a beautiful chaotic mess of everything i want as my aesthetic
