I may have to agree to disagree with you here I'm afraid. On the matter of fear, at least; sometimes fear has very little to do with jealousy and a great deal to do with fear, I've found.

But it's a stupid soul, not a brave one, that dares challenge a mage openly. Or at least, once I was allowed to cry insult, it was. I wasn't allowed to do that at first, which grated.

 

So dueling is prevalent in your culture, Helios?

Oh surely. I tend to count Fear under impressed, personally. It just isn't a particularly positive kind of it.
Personally I am quite open about my emotions when it comes to people insulting me. But then I do not have the patience for nobles. Never had.

Within certain circumstances. The Orlesians love duels. The Marchers a little less so, but they and the Fereldans both have a sense of assumed honor at certain levels of nobility. I understand Tevinter does duels as well, but a different sort. My people don't, because we don't have the people to spare on petty rivalries. Duels are pomp and circumstance, and the Dalish have little enough time for either.

I did learn though, for my position as Inquisitor. In case it became an issue. Thankfully, it was a rare occasion where I couldn't appoint a champion in my stead, and Cullen was able enough at finding proficient ones.

Pine for me while gazing at perfection? You might have to find a mirror though for that.

I did call up some mirrors over there, but they're more the arcane shimmering type than the "look at your reflection" type.

 

Dueling was still prevalent among members of my class until the first year of the Great War, when it was outlawed. Lower classes were prohibited from it. Prior to adulthood, duels were fought to first blood, not death, and you can generally tell a good duelist by the lack of scars. Those who aren't good boast about how tough and brave they are to have withstood those cuts, but I'll take skill over trying to prove courage any day. Lots of people are stupid enough not to avoid getting hurt, it proves nothing.
