I created a new account on Pottermore to try to get resorted by putting a dot in my gmail adress, and it worked :D The goodnews is that I am now no longer a Slytherin. The annoying news is that I am once again sorted into hufflepuff :( I wanted Gryffindor, but apparently that's not an option with the way I answer the questions XD At least it feels like Hufflepuff fits me better than Slytherin. Though I still think I belong in Gryffindor.

So, I know everyone knows about Muggleborns bringing in black market ballpoint pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, paper, and all. But.

Is there similarly a market for slide rules? Because yeah a regular calculator might get messed up because electronics, but a slide rule wouldn't and would be INCREDIBLY handy.

My HP OC has been trying to spell a graphing calculator to work at Hogwarts for years.

Someday an older relative of hers will suggest this, and then she will walk over to a wall and slowly hit her head against it over and over again.

I just had the mental image of a muggleborn telling someone born in the wizarding world that slide rules got humans to the moon and the wizarding world one just. Waving it around, trying all kinds of spells, trying to figure out how this weird Muggle portkey works.

Like that old joke of the americans finding out their ballpoint wouldn't work in space and spending loads of money creating a new one, and the russians just using a pencil? :P

That one bugs me because there are really excellent reasons not to use pencils in space. Microgravity + graphite + wood shavings is a REALLY BAD IDEA.

    BaseDeltaZero Shitposting all night.

WE INTERRUPT THIS BROADCAST TO BRING YOU RANDOM SPACE PEN FACTS

Both programs originally used mechanical pencils, but NASA (at least) switched to a pressurized pen after the Apollo 1 fire due to the potential hazard. (Apollo 1 wasn't caused by a pencil, but still).
However, the pen was developed by an independent inventor (mainly for outdoorsmen and divers) and NASA paid only $2.39 per pen. The Soviet Union eventually also purchased the same pens.

You can buy one for $20 if you want :confutoot:

i really liked fantastic beasts tbh rambling about spoilery shit under the cut

HOLY SHIT?????????????????? the concept of obscurus opens up so much fucked up angst potential i unironically love it. honestly holy fuck, i did not expect it to take that dark of a turn and then suddenly it was like full throttle awful bullshit.

where does the obscurus come from? does it come from somewhere or does it spontaneously form? is it more akin to a disease than a creature? if so how is newt keeping one "alive" in his case? how did he separate it from the girl in the first place? did she die before or after (or during???) the separation process? harry and voldemort were both punished for their magic but didn't develop one, is there a level of how much abuse you have to endure or does it require a conscious choice to suppress your magical powers? if the ministry of magic in the UK has a "trace" on magical children does that then prevent an obscurus from forming (as they could be informed of their powers/liberated from captivity early on) or would the obscurus obscure the trace? was graves lying when he said he could smell the squib on credence or does the obscurus make you "appear" like a squib?? is there are cure or is the only method prevention??? what the fuck?????

i have so many questions im almost certain JK can't and wont answer.

@Sol i feel like graves/grindlewald can't "smell" a squib, im fairly certain that he thought that credence was totally non-magical for a while, found out that he was adopted and that his original mother was a witch, and then surmised that since he's late-teen-ish that magic would have manifested by then. i dont think anyone can smell that, tho that would be a neat af superpower

also: im calling it RIGHT FUCKING NOW that ariana dumbledore was an obscurial, it all fits, im still of the "take harry potter away from JKR" train but also, nice fucking job, tying it all together

@rats oh shit, tru. i completely forgot about that. that would suggest spontaneous creation then though, since she was surrounded by magical folk who wouldn't have forced that on her. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

iirc she was assaulted by a group of muggle boys when she was like, 4, so that could've been sufficiently traumatizing? i might be remembering that wrong tho lol
