...How did that even happen? The things I always remember Terry Goodkind for are a) villains who do lots of rapes and gruesome murders to prove how evil they are and b) weird random objectivist political screeds. (I read them when I was probably too young to be reading them, and burned out more or less because I realized there... wasn't actually a series metaplot, just the author making stuff up as he went along.)
The sporker I linked to points out the "making stuff up as he went along" is a constant problem, to the point that Goodkind will contradict himself within a paragraph. And then there's the weird morality which makes me think Goodkind has a very ironic surname.
The sad thing is, his book that's a giant Objectivist tract against social support structures is probably the tightest plot out of them all.
My perception is skewed because I was like 11 and not great at evaluating things and that was the age when I'd often read bits of books out of order and skip to the parts that looked more interesting, but I remember the slowly growing sense of dissatisfaction that this didn't actually... seem to be going anywhere? And none of this new stuff seemed to have anything to do with anything that happened in the previous books? I was used to epic fantasy series that had a solid metaplot structure and goal they were working toward, so the realization that this one was just sort of meandering around made me get fed up.
What, faith of the fallen? That's because it wasn't his plot. He copy- pasted that together from Fountainhead and We The Living.
That's what made me quit the series. We The Living sucked the first time, even when I still liked Ayn Rand I was mad that he tricked me into reading it again.
Here's a fanfic gripe/lament I have: when fanfic authors delete their fics, and I hadn't thought to save them beforehamd ;-; It especially saddens me because Ao3 has the "orphan work" feature! So that you can remove all connections to your identity from the work in question! But some authors choose to completely delete their fics instead. I'm sure they must have their reasons, but it makes me sad. Sometimes we get lucky and someone did think to save the fic beforehand, but. Not always :c
i admit, i didn't even know about the awful stuff that happened in later books when i decided i hated terry goodkind. i rage-quit the first one a hundred pages in because the main characters' interactions with each other read to me like the writings of an overconfident alien who had seen humans interact "like at least twice you guys" and was thus an expert. it made me furious in a way that i cannot articulate. the later stuff was just icing on the hate-cake.
can we put roleplay gripes here too because i swear to FUCK if i connect to ONE MORE character on msparp who makes any kind of fucking reference to dualscar being buddy buddy with condesce i am going to PEEL MY FACE OFF
Arguably it'd be a different thread but if we get enough gripes, we can always split it off and have the relevant bits moved over. So yeah, I see no reason not to. That's writing too! And eesh, that's - yeah. No. Dualscar is not the guy who actually has any deep relationship with Condesce; even taking into account that most of the information we get about him comes through a Serket filter, he's not canonically stated to actually be connected to her, it's stated that he wants to be, that he pines for her and wants her to notice him. But we're given info that invites us to assume that Dualscar is Eridan, but with less luck: he's not even quadranted with Condesce, he's at best on the fringes of the court and not well-regarded; the fact that he's just outright killed by the GHB (for, allegedly, the crime of not being funny) tells us as much, really. I mean, you can do the whole "Mindfang was misinterpreting and didn't have all the info", but that sort of tactic requires a lot of well-executed work to pull off correctly in a fanfic. It's even more work in an RP, where good etiquette requires that you not spend ten paragraphs on background that's only relevant to your character and gives no one else anything to work from.

Cries)
Yeah, I can't blame you there. I mean, the only reasonable option is to have your character react in disbelief if it was verbal dialogue, but even that sort of...requires that you have spoons to cope with fighting them over that. And, yeah, no, I'd have disconnected too; why fight someone over characterization when you can just...go find someone who isn't picking a thing that's going to drive you nuts?
howdy howdy i rise from the ashes to bitch about stuff that happens more to me because of my fics, rather than because i read someone elses. ive been getting comments on the regular that tell me to update or something of that ilk and even got some as far as 'begging' (almost demanding really) i write another chapter for a fic that was intended to be a oneshot. its really degrading (is that the right word here, im not sure) when people just want my content and don't stop to consider that i have a life beyond my stories. ive asked them many times to stop and had even put in almost all my stories and my profile on AO3 that my update scheduel is very random because of my life and insperations and sometimes i can go months without updating yet the comments keep comming. ive almost been short with a few people on occasion but ive kept myself civil thankfully
