I'm just waiting for Mara to throw more Marin Karins around so Sala can expand her already-significant Press Turn icon collection. :::PPP

    @IvyLB:

Please take a deep breath. We're friends and I know you care passionately about the robots, but this is starting to sound like a Tumblr fight. The combination of tone and sarcastic snapback at the end is ... kind of impossible to respond to, but I'm going to try because I like you and I like your characters. However, we're getting IC and OOC mixed up and it's really starting to frustrate me, too.

OOC: Don't hold me responsible for knowing a canon I don't know by saying I'm not allowed to respond OOC to things that other people have said using my own brain. If I get it wrong, you can just tell me so without all the storm and fury. This is why I sometimes get uncomfortable sometimes playing with robots in SPR, because when I/and or my characters respond to the information we're given, and get it wrong, it is one thing for the characters to be upset and quite another for the players to. Knowledge of robot canon is not universal even on Kintsugi. And even if I did know the canon, Valiska wouldn't know it, so it would not affect the way I play her. If you try and read the Rave from the POV of someone who does not know as much about the TF verse as you do, based on what the characters said, it sounds exactly like a programmed analogue for possession or mind control.

(And if you try to read the Rave + OOC from the perspective of a player who does not know these things, same thing.) You could have just said "that's not how it works" to the Billford comment, without the storm and fury, especially given the fact that we had been playing for quite some time without anyone else who does know the canon responding to that, thus ... not exactly giving me any reason to think I'd guessed wrong.

Nothing you're saying about shadowplay makes me the player inclined to think the victims are any more responsible than I did five minutes ago. I don't know who I would be if I hadn't been sexually assaulted, but I like me now. That doesn't take the blame for it off the guy who did it. And the fact that people don't actually know that they've been fucked with doesn't make me hold them more responsible either, because at least if they knew they could have tried to resist the programming. I'm sorry, we're going to have to disagree about this. It just makes me feel even more terrible for the victims knowing that the mnemosurgery can be so subtle it's never discovered. These people have been broken on purpose and even if they did develop some momentum on their own, there's not necessarily any reason to think they'd have done these things otherwise.

IC: It is a fundamental part of Valiska's moral code that people are not responsible for the actions that they take when under the control of beings who are more powerful than they are who have forced changes to their minds and bodies. Since we both know that this is potentially going to be a problem if the characters insist on fighting about it (particularly since her 25 year marriage is thoroughly knotted up in this particular principle), it would be a good idea for us OOC as players to nudge the characters in some other direction. Unless we want to have that fight. But I don't, particularly because it seems likely to not stay IC.

so, the fundamental disagreement is over how responsible a shadowplayed character would be considered to be for their actions post-shadowplay?

like, now you guys are both aware of What Shadowplay Is, you agree about that. but you guys don't agree about the moral implications of it for the victims.

like, it feels like ivy is saying, "shockwave did a big bad thing as a result of getting shadowplayed, a thing the shadowplayer didn't plan on him doing and wouldn't want him to do, and liked being shadowplayed so blaming that fully on the shadowplay would be weird," and cT is saying, "it's not his fault, though, since the shadowplay changed who he is and was done to deliberately control him. there is no reason to think he would've done the thing if he wasn't shadowplayed."

I don't know enough about Shockwave to know if he would have done the thing without the shadowplay, but in order to assign him blame for it, I would need to see evidence that it was part of his character before that.

And really, I am hesitant to assign anyone blame for destroying the entire universe, because it's such a fundamentally self-destructive thing to do. It's like the ultimate narcissistic suicide attempt. Even people who are hell bent on destroying each other (like some of the Russian and US leaders in the 60s and 70s) tend to balk at doing it when it would mean taking out all their own people and a whole bunch of innocent bystanders, which is why we're all still alive to have this conversation in 2016.

I'm also not really invested in whether Shockwave would have done the thing. If I find a way to get involved in the series (and I'd like to) I will be then, but...it's not like we're discussing something that actually happened and that people on the forums lost family members in. If that were the case I would be completely down with the statement that I shouldn't be talking about it at all unless I do the research because real lives would have been lost and destroyed.

I know it feels that way to the true fans, just like I get crazy upset about things people say about Ford but...I'm not actually talking about Shockwave here, I'm talking only about characters I do know and am invested in, the ones in the game with me.

@cryptoThelematrix I am not going to respond to any kind of argument while you ascribe emotions to me. I am also not going to acknowledge the accusation that I am getting IC and OOC mixed up when I pointed out something that you might have misunderstood about a canon you aren't familiar with (in a manner that i thought was civil enough but if I am mistaken there I apologize.) and then responding to you bringing up Valiska's stance on the whole thing.
I am a sarcastic and snappy person. I was actually trying to make light of the situation which is not actually a severe disagreement, but clearly I'm not as funny as I thought. Oh well.

I hate it when my phone does that, which it does all the time. If I'm on my phone I stay logged in as me, and just use "post as user". Which occasionally produces hilarious results (@the author speaks and @the bill of wrongs are right next to each other on the list for example) but is less likely to stick my actual face next to my characters' posts...

brainwashing, becoming cursed, and/or becoming demonic. it was a bad idea, but it's up to you to decide how cronus gets to suffer from it, since he's your character!

in the acual shin megami tensei game series, the curse is basically an arbitrary/random magical handicap, and he presumably brainwashes people into serving him

he is otherwise something of a joke character who exists to make your life more difficult, and since what you see of his actual abilities mostly has to do with rpg battling, what he can actually do is really left open to interpretation

and i'm not familiar enough with buddhism to know what the actual, non video game character mara would do if it successfully tempted someone

With how I've been writing Sala it feels weird to do a bracketed description, so I'm just going to say over here that for Halloween, her teeth look quite a bit sharper to anyone who might happen to be paying attention. (An advantage of building a body yourself: you can change stuff at will just because it freaks people out.)
