Today I designed a capsule wardrobe for the first time. I tried to use as many things that I already own as possible, but I'm still missing a lot of basics. Still, I'm not too hard up for money right now and I have a couple of extra gigs at work, so I'm going to try and get the missing pieces as well-fitting and good quality as I can afford. Here it is on Polyvore; concrit is welcome! Since I've never done this before. If you think it looks unbalanced or there's a piece excess/missing, lmk. Edit: meaning concrit of the wardrobe, not the polyvore graphic! Graphic design is my passion. Haha. Edit 2: I added a pic.
It's supposed to be a small wardrobe made up of very versatile pieces which can be mixed & matched in many different combinations! In theory it should make for a chic, varied but cohesive look. And also it should make me spend less time in the morning staring into my closet and wishing I hadn't laddered my last pair of tights the day before.
General question for thread, ill move it if this is the wrong place - my "style" has been the same since high school in that ive been wearing graphic tees and sweatpants ( jeans when i had to do a Thing) since i was fourteen and depressed. Now that im older and less depressed, how do i clothes/accessories? I dont even know where to start or what it is people wear nowadays or what. Help?
i don't know what your style is (to find it you might want to find certain fashion blogs that ping you and see where they get stuff from?) but i've found modcloth has a pretty wide variety of things, in a lot of sizes. stuff that appeals to my fat, alternative ass, even! though if you're more masculine presenting it isn't going to be useful, and i'm not sure that i can help ):
*cartwheels into thread* i have no consistant style but my wardrobe is a weird and disapointing mix of "me, a vain fucker who cares too much about their looks" and "i woke up this way because ive been wearing the same clothes for like two weeks straight help". i mainly wear jeans + a tshirt or button up, and am usually in sore need of a belt. i always lose my belts. i like coloring my hair though! and when i have time i like curling the top part.
[With the caveat that my fashion is v much a work in progress] I don't know what your [prospective] style is, but looking at fashion blogs & polyvore has helped me get a better idea of how I want to look. Polyvore in particular has this neat feature where it shows you lots of items of clothing and accessories on a dashboard and you can "like" them as on tumblr. Then you can view all your liked items and look for unifying features that you could incorporate into your style. Other vague things I've been learning recently: Even if you love the thing, if it doesn't fit properly then it'll make you feel and look uncomfortable. (Ofc you can decide what "fit properly" means for you. Personally I don't like oversized clothes, and I find lots of shirts too narrow across the shoulders.) A cool blazer makes jeans + t shirt into fashion every time. Plainer clothes look smarter but are harder to wear. A flat buckle elastic belt will make every pair of jeans fit better. (This is relevant for my big thighs/narrow hips). Colour theory e.g. seasonal colour analysis: it's totally valid to ignore this completely, but I find it useful when looking for clothes & accessories especially. By SCA terms I'm an "Autumn", so these days I tend to wear more dark, warm colours, with gold rather than silver jewellery.
I feel ya on belts. I've taken to getting men's skinny jeans for a number of reasons, and I find that they tend to gap on me--I have big hips and a big ass, but I think it's just a fit thing, so belts = good. If it helps, I really like the seatbelt-style belts! Hot Topic has some really fun fandom ones (I have a SU one based on Steven's shirt and a MLP one with various cutie marks so far) and they work great with that basic jeans-and-tee combo, IMO. And they're VERY adjustable, which is nice.
By the way, here's a protip for those of you who like makeup, especially if you're new to it and/or short on funds: November/December is, at least around here, a good time to stock up, because of holiday gift sets. You can get really decent collections and such at drugstores for SUPER cheap--one of my fave eyeshadow palettes was purchased at Walgreens a few winters back for about 5 bucks (twelve pretty large shadows in really nice colors!). Ulta also sells lots of gift sets around this time of year, if you wanna splurge a bit more.
hey guys, there's apparently new hair dye on sale at target that is specifically to be used over dark hair. If anyone's got any reviews of it or anything, I'd like to see cause I wanna try it, but not without other people trying first.
i have jet back hair and i only had to bleach mine to carrot color in order to get blues/purples/dark greens, if that helps? if you're not aiming for light colors you don't have to bleach it all the way to white. also coconut oil before the bleach + mixing lots of conditioner in with the hair dye ime keeps your hair soft
so my two biggest tips re: How To Do A Fashion are accessories & contrast. even wearing a relatively simple outfit of jeans + t-shirt can look intentional & stylish with just the addition of one detail- a bold necklace, a few cool pins, a nifty ring, etc. i've recently fallen in love w/ collar clips for my work outfits- there's something rlly understatedly cool about nice-fitting trousers + button-up shirt + collar clips ala this: Spoiler: giant me srry and by contrast i mean using the graphic design principle of contrasting two disparate elements to highlight a feature/bring visual interest. so whether it's wearing all one color and then adding in an accessory or smth in bright red, or contrasting two separate styles, or even just taking advantage of color theory when designing a color palette. one of my fav ways to use contrast is smashing up things that are very "feminine" and soft and pink with things that are very "masculine" or tough, like a pretty floral dress + combat boots. and i definitely second looking at fashion blogs & polyvore for reference. even just seeing how people put together outfits, even if you feel like they aren't something you'd wear at all, can be informative. also, lastly, i think fashion is best when you don't overthink it. it should feel like playing, like experimenting, and it should make you happy and comfortable above all. i think fashion "rules" are bullshit and everyone should wear more glitter.
yeah! ymmv but i got p good color without having to bleach all the way. i did 2 rounds of not-super-strong bleach right after each other. the cashier at the store recomended i get a stronger one so i wouldnt have to do it twice but i thought doing 2 rounds would be playing it a bit more safe bc i could have stopped after 1 round if i was worried abt like... hair falling out or something? shrug
