We have beings like robots in our world- we have robots too, but these are different- we call Constructs. Those Above made them, and no other force can destroy them, or even damage their shell. So mortals must find other ways to study them. There are those who track them and the things they build and destroy, and they are cartographers. There are those who take apart the gifts they bring, and they're tinkerers. And there are those that try to find out what happens when you impede one from its unknowable tasks.

We call them puddles.

We are forbidden that. Those Above, and their Constructs, give us the technology we are permitted. This small part of the world gets hard light while its neighbor's most advanced building is a water wheel. We cannot build, the Constructs do. If we try to reverse engineer it, to exceed beyond what we are given, the Constructs destroy it. And if we try to stop them?

Ford sighs. "I wish that were true, little one. But all the methods, including voting, can go wrong if the people behind them go wrong."

He turns to Moira. "So...how do you get on with your brothers? Do you want to bring them home, or...do you hope they never find out where it is?"

 

Mostly just the one brother, since he was in my unit. Others around my age went into other things. Him and the two I worked with... I don't know. They weren'- They didn't- -breathes, recomposes herself- If they knew I was alive and stayed away they might wonder if I think it's worth it. I don't know if I could talk them around, or even have the chance. This whole mess runs deep for us, and nobody's left like I did. Probably best if I stayed dead for them. Easier that way.

 

Ford wraps her in another hug. "Whatever you think best," he says gently. "Remember also that Lise is good at talking to people from backgrounds like that, about things like that."
