hmmmmm. honestly it's hard to say! if you don't feel comfortable doing it then it's not like you're required to keep trying. that said you also don't have to take every mishap along the way as a sign that the Universe Doesn't Want You Doing This. it'd be one thing if things like that were happening on a regular basis, but if it's just the one time you could just not use incense or other things that are valuable and you don't want to have bad stuff happen to. or you could not make an altar or do something else.

going based off of what others in this thread have said, you could try asking the online cards you've used and seeing what's wrong? or just use the interpretations to figure out what you want to do next. ...which reminds me that i should probably ask my cards/whatever might be watching over me what i should do about Certain Things, since i'm p sure it'll jumpstart the problem-solving process.

Hm. I suffer from really, really bad existential-terror obsessive fears, and I'm worried that trying this is going to make things worse instead of better. I personally think that if these things don't exist then it's still vital for people to believe in them because it's not going to do any damage and staying happy is more important. But that's a view that doesn't really apply well to oneself.

Oh yeah definitely! As I've said, I think belief is pretty important. It does a lot for a lot of people.

Also :( @ existential fear. I have a problem with other obsessive fears, so while I don't know the exact feeling I do have a p good idea what obsessive fear is like (I likely have a case of undiagnosed pure o OCD).

I think I preferred it when I was obsessing over suddenly turning into a child molester or being watched by the government. At least I could theoretically do something about those :(

I've been talking with Dad about tarot stuff a little more often, and it is just. really tedious. Because he is the ~experienced tarot reader~ and thinks his preferences are factual and sacrosanct. It basically stemmed out of me asking for a specific deck for Christmas, but apparently he is very adamant about The Right Way To Read Tarot and what decks are unacceptable (why you gotta shit on Hello Kitty tarot, dude). Arguably a little mansplainy, now that I think about it. Wasn't able to convince him that his opinions don't matter that much if I'm the one reading the cards.

I'm anticipating him getting me a standard Rider-Waite instead of the deck I asked for. Maybe a Thoth.

Also, he follows the 'don't buy yourself a tarot deck, only get them as a gift' superstition, which is why he doesn't know that I already have a deck, which I bought for myself, haaaaaa. So he thinks this would be my first which is why he's pushing a training-wheels deck.

Alls I've got is a "training wheels" deck (Radiant Rider-Waite) that I bought for myself and don't feel much connection with. I'd honestly love to swap with someone so I can have a deck that I didn't buy.

@Lambda what tradition? :o also agreed that your dad is being weird about this. Like, i thought the whole point of tarot was that different people would have different styles of reading, so what works for your dad might not work for you.

(On decks: I have the shadowscape deck and it is very pretty but also very neglected bc I am Bad At Remembering To Do Tarot. Also a hello kitty deck does sound p DANG sweet)

sorry, brain fog, I don't get what you're asking?

also, on Hello Kitty, I think the one that's out there is majors only, but it is exists. not sure why that (along with fairy/leprechaun?? theme) was Dad's example of frivolous tarot. plus I'd. well, not kill a man since it's just majors, but maybe maim one for that one Pokemon tarot, so No Silly Tarot as a rule irks me. plus Night Vale, Homestuck, etc

There's a thing on some parts of the witch community where you can't buy your decks, they must be either gifts or... Stolen. :l Don't ask me to explain why the fuck they think that though.

    @Lambda oh! I meant what tradition, if any, you follow? Like eclectic or otherwise? I ask mostly bc you mentioned your dad and I wondered if it was a family thing, since I know a few people on here have witchy families. And I was curious. ^^;

Also for pop culture/"silly" tarot, there is also a (digital) Lisa Frank one that's only majors and if the artist ever does minors I am debating having a print shop(?) make it for me bc I love that deck.

Oh! I don't really have a tradition, I mostly just flail my way through. Not really a family thing, because when I first picked it up, I was under the impression that my father had given up on tarot and disapproved of it, so I was trying to keep it under the radar. Only recently did I learn that he's still into it. And any further witchy stuff I do, I'm probably keeping to myself.

Plus my current deck is Silicon Dawn, which is fairly genderweird and full of queer stuff, so definitely not something I want my parents to see.

Oh my god, I've seen the Lisa Frank arcana and it's fucking gorgeous, I was sad when I found out that it's not a full deck.
There are genderweird tarots? What does that entail?

@Lambda ah ok! I'm p much doing the same thing, altho I'm v curious about Nordic and Germanic traditions, since my great-grandfather came from Norway, and my last name is German. plus I have some interest in chaos magic. But eclectic probably suits me best anyway. Also seconding the curiosity about genderweird decks, as I had no idea those were even A Thing.
