Agreed on the antibiotics :P I think you'd need some kind of analgesic/anaesthesia too. Though those could be found in nature, possibly, so we'd need someone with herbal knowledge :)

    Though this:
means we'd probably need some steroids too. Also steroids to treat allergic reactions.

I do wonder if insomnia would be less of a problem if you don't have to keep a regular 9-5 with the rest of the world. Who cares if you fall asleep at noon and wake up at 8 then go out and do your thing at night?*

*This might suck during winter if you're prone to SAD though.

I suspect it would be. Like - there's the issue of "how are you getting the lights to work with", but if you've got enough light to do whatever you're working on, then why's it an issue to be awake at the time that works best for you? And it'd actually be an advantage, because then there's always someone awake and active at any time of day and guess whose settlement is less likely to be surprise attacked successfully if there's always someone awake to sound the alarm?

Re: SAD - I did see an article somewhere (I wish I could remember where) that suggested Seasonal Affective Disorder was actually an adaptation for people in northern climes in pre-industrial times that may have resulted from the same thing that causes bipolar disorder? And the way they explained it did make sense, because if you're very active when it's warm and there's lots of light and everything's green and growing, then you're going to (hopefully) get lots of survival-helpful stuff done - lots of food gathered and preserved, lots of fiber turned into yarn or thread and made into clothing, lots of repairs and improvements done on the dwelling, that sort of thing. And if your main activities when it turns cold and dark are "sleep a lot, have A Food, maybe do some basic maintenance, sleep more", then you're not going to be spending a lot of energy - which means you need less energy to survive, which boosts your odds of surviving through the winter.
    Post-industrial, it's...obviously less helpful, though.

Yeah, definitely an adaptation that could be useful in a survival situation (provided that survival situation doesn't kick off in the middle of winter because FUCK!)

So I keep trying to reply to this thread with my relevent skill sets and the thing is... i kind of get overwhelmed trying to think about ALL THE THINGS I've researched in a list form, and it just ends up boiling down to

And I think that is actually my biggest contributing factor aside from the stuff I have practiced skill at, and the stuff I have book learned about, but not yet done. I. Fucking. Love. LEARNING NEW SKILLSSSSS! Picking up a new special interest and going full sperg on it might actually count in and of itself as a special interest for me. Especially regarding old skills that were once common, but have fallen out of practice after modern mechanization made them obsolete. I keep collecting books on homesteading, wilderness survival and bush craft, gardening, carpentry; you name it I probably have a book or three on it, because at some point I wanted to know about it, and then I followed that up with binge watching Youtube videos so I can watch someone else do it. And then I want to tell everyone else about the thing because holy shit guys this is so cool, you would not believe! Uh, which I guess leads into the two other things I got; a legit joy for teaching and spreading any knowledge I've picked up, and a modest but decent collection of physical books that can be shared and passed around.

Drawbacks: I have kids that are too young to really contribute to much rn, and still need adult supervision, so my time and energy will get at least some what sucked up by them, though that will obviously not be the case forever, I do have a tendency to get a little too enthusiastic about my projects and start more than i end up being able to handle at once, and i will hit the end of my ability to Deal With Things, and will need a quiet place to recharge to avoid loss of speech capability and sensory overload.

It's useful to have people up at any given hour. You need night watch at the least.

This is awesome. Y'all are definitely the sort I'd like to throw in with in the event of an apocalypse.

    Stuff that might be useful:
    • I'm a social chameleon. This definitely has drawbacks when you're not in an apocalypse and I've worked hard at being less... blendy? But I'm pretty good at merging into groups.
    • I'm good with group dynamics in general. I can help keep them together and functional under stress. Sometimes I can see and help prevent the formation of destructive patterns.
    • I'm the psychological equivalent of not afraid of blood. Empathy is one of my strong suits, but other people's emotional pain and trauma doesn't often phase me. I'm a very good listener.
    • I can comfortably walk for hours at a fairly brisk pace. I'm not so good with hills, though.
    • I'm familiar enough with the night sky to be able to tell you which way is north and when summer will be ending soon. It's not much, but at least it's stuff that might be useful.
    • I'm a quick learner.
As for Kryptonite, I have a thyroid disorder that requires HRT. I'd be increasingly useless and miserable after a few weeks without medication. It might eventually kill me, but I don't know how long that would take. However, someone did mention the possibility of raising pigs. Some of the thyroid medication currently on the market is made from desiccated pig thyroid glands. I have no idea whether the number of pig sacrifices would be sustainable, how the process is done, or whether it could be recreated by survivalists well enough to get reliable and safe dosing, but at least there's hope?

@Verily I was doing research on synthetic thyroid the other day, and the paper documenting its initial production in the 20s is now freely available. T3, thyroxine, is honestly a fairly simple hormone - a steroid with iodine - so with some basic lab equipment, which would be useful for synthesizing other basic medications anyway, and someone with some experience with biochemistry or biomedical engineering, it should be feasible to make. Insulin, on the other hand, is a peptide hormone and is more difficult to synthesize, but animal insulin was the only one available until the 60s - it can cause immune reactions sometimes, but it's better than nothing.

I'm afraid I'm not much of a roleplayer. It's a little too energy-intensive for me most of the time. I assume you're referring to the Breakening RP thread? It looks really cool! I probably won't be able to participate, but I will definitely try to read it, concentration levels permitting!

Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that can be preeeeetty easily synthesized with basic lab equipment that won't be as 100% awesome as modern medication but will do the trick better than nothing. And pooling education and resources will hopefully mean getting back up to levels as is, possibly within a decade or two.

It occurs to me, and i forget whether this has been mentioned: but, with the talk of hormones and insulin, how would kintsugipocalypse handle needles?

You can get away with using the same lancet a couple times for testing the same person's blood sugar (sharing is probably not good) but doctors like to wave around the chart of microscope-views of used needles and, yeah even if sterilized they get all blunted and shitty. Would people go raiding pharmaces and stockpiling needles?

Also disposing of sharps, how do?

I wanna say that if we can sharpen knives, we can probably sharpen needles too, but I admit that I've got no clue how we'd actually go about doing that. We could probably make a sharps disposal bin, but that just leaves us with a bin of sharps in this situation unless we figure out what to do with the sharps afterwards.
