Why do they do that?

... they have sex with the station?

 

Lots of reasons. Because they no longer believe in the cause, or have converted to another. Because they feel that they've been hurt or wronged. Because they never agreed to join in the first place and are rebelling against what they were born or forced into.

A lot of the border towns are technically full of traitors- the empires want a great deal from their citizens, and demand that they follow many rules. So when they started to colonize the new continent a lot of people stopped sending things back to their empires like they were supposed to, because the empires are far away and nobody can rule the Woods. This is treason, because they're not following the rules like they're supposed to, but the empires don't want to send people to the border towns and the towns don't want to deal with the empires. So the empires just assume that if they stop getting shipments then everyone's dead; the towns can't ask for help if they make the woodfolk angry and get attacked, which is part of the deal they have with the empires, but they're usually the kind of people who prefer to fight themselves rather than rely on others anyway.

 

But how does having sex with stations factor into it?
