SO THAT HAPPENS. Someone leaves because, oh my god. This basically kills the game, because of COURSE it does. No one wants to play in an RP where, as soon as you decide to follow along with the plot the GM has, you get roadblocked until you find the One Magic PC. He then asks ME to come up with the plot (because what's more fun than a dungeon crawl that you have to come up with yourself?) because this guy.

I mean, I know why, it's because god forbid a character not be a direct power fantasy and god forbid their author ever feel remotely emasculated, but.

What is the point of a Shirou knockoff who's actually a Standard Shonen Protagonist and not a thin layer of sword-patterned tinfoil stretched over a gaping hole where an ego should be.

 

And this was the point where I fucking lost it.

Once I had to explain to this guy, firstly that psychic powers do not usually involve reality warping, and more importantly, that putting limits on your players so that people can't flick their fingers and resolve the plot is generally Good.

No, seriously. I had to explain to this guy the concept of 'game breakers make games not fun.' I have logs of this conversation happening.

 

Mention of tvtropes rp reminds me of just how bummed I get when rp ideas don't pan out because the people in charge haven't thought about anything. So like one was called Openfield. It was a neat concept. A sort of Rebooty or .hack-esque thing were people played sapient AI exploring a new and unstable part of their world. That being the titular open field. However due to lack of any purpose it never went anywhere and died very fast. This happens a lot with on-going freeform rp games. And it's just really sad. It's also made me very wary of joining people's freeform games.

 

Back when I used to use msparp, there was this really, really weird fandom trend for almost any Dave to immediately disconnect.
Often before you could even paste and post your prompt in.

There was also those two times I had to deal with trolls-one was posting sudden NSFW in the SFW section after a few lines of SFW then immediately disconnecting, and another was hilarious at first and then suddenly wasn't so I called in the mods. That was at the time when the mods' response to malicious trolling was to slap the offender with a text filter that turned every letter they said into something along the lines of "[panda emoticon]I am a cute little panda! [panda emoticon] with every post in a different colour and changed their name to something like 'A PANDA'.

We had to wait until the troll got irritated and left to talk about the trolling, because as it turned out the panda filter turned even a small post into multiple posts due to the post-filter post being bigger than the character limit. They changed the panda filter later.

 

why would you think that would be a good filter to use...

Tumblr RP absolutely ruined villain characters.

You can't have one without explicitly stating no I'm rping a villain! My ideas are not theirs! I do not condone what they do in a real life setting!!

but even if you do that, you are not safe from being labeled "problematic" and shunned. Your villain can only do cartoon logic evil, and even then you can't be too harsh or you're bad. Your villain has to be immediately put in a domestic setting and somebody's mom friend. You are a villain only in name because if you're anything more extreme you're a rl terrorist.

Also no ambiguous characters, you need them to be CLEARLY THE GOOD GUY but also oh man do they love doing evil things like murder and cannibalization. Look how edgy they are. They're such a badass!

And also the pissing on transmen characters while raising transwomen characters up to godly status.

And pissing on ciswomen characters. The sluts.

Also no OCs. Canon only. No OCs allowed. AU your character until they're basically an OC but slap that "This is an AU Canon character" label and you'll get a boatload of followers. OCs? Fuck 'em.

 

im still on this cuz im so frustrated i shouldnt have to write an essay* about why my morally ambiguous OC with a vagina deserves to be taken seriously and is multi-faceted and I shouldn't have to boil him down to domestic tropes just so i can get a comment or two

Oh, relatable though. I had to have a disclaimer page on Mikel too, because I needed people to be abundantly aware that this was not a nice man, he wasn't going to instantly apologize to your sweet baby if he hurt their feelings, and I, the mun, was not morally obligated to protect you from his terrible self if you were up to following and playing with him.

 

there's actually kind of a notably high amount of unambiguously villainous transguy oc characters, that are allowed to be that, in certain kink communities

but that also comes with the narrowing down of "everyone expects porn 90 percent of the time" so

not useful for everyone

 

See, I don't mind kink characters being kink characters, but also the whole of tumblr RP will, eventually (sooner if not later), demonize those groups. You'll see many many "DNFI" pages state they will block you if you so much as interact with a character from one of these groups. Even accidentally! God forbid you don't like to shoot first, ask questions later.

Also villains being secksy, rapey villains for the sake of getting to the PWP. Be unabashedly horrible to my character but I'd personally love a reason for it.

 

yeahhh I don't really have any villain ocs, myself, but just having a kink blog, I lowkey expect every ask notification to be the start of a witch hunt

None of us mods liked going into the RP subforums to mediate disputes, because it was always emotionally overwrought kids flipping out at each other. No entertainment in that. I know several times the site owners were this -><- close to just deleting the RP forum.

 

Actually, we had to talk Eddie down from the notion of deleting the forums altogether. Quite a few times.

 

Gods I am so happy I was not part of the mod team.
