"Wow," Mabel says quietly. "We have thylacines at our house, but I've never seen a white one before." She glances at Onyx. "They're shy when they're wild. But they're willing to make friends. I don't understand why the people on our Earth killed them off. This one seems to be less shy than usual. That's the noise they make when they decide they like you."

"Probably nothing." Mabel smiles. "There are people from many different universes in these dream bubbles. I'm Mabel. I'm from Dimension 52 now. I didn't know genies could be little!"

 

"It's a rude word, too, although my family and friends at home still use it a lot." Mabel shrugs.

 

I am honored, then. [Her voice is fond, though still quiet to avoid startling the thylacine.] I... could not answer why they went extinct on your Earth. We aren't in the same universe; that would be one of my brothers' domains. It is a shame, though. At least this one, and those in your home, live on.

[Onyx waves to Iridium, a stylus still trapped between two fingers.]

 

What's that for?

 

Note-taking. [She indicates the tablet in her other hand.] My claws damage screens easily, and my current situation in the material plane makes finding replacements difficult.

 

Oh. Have you tried a book?

 

[Since the thylacine doesn't seem bothered by Iridium speaking at normal volume, Onyx lets her own voice raise a little.] Yes. They're less durable and more difficult to clean; I prefer dataslates, despite the higher chance of destroying one myself.

 

Then I would suggest a voice-to-text function for times when styluses aren't viable, but I imagine you've figured that out yourself.

 

[She nods.] I was unsure whether the little one-- [she tips her head towards the thylacine--] would be disturbed by the volume necessary for accurate speech-recording. Typing is far more quiet.

 

Oh! I didn't notice them.

-Iridium puts a hand up to her visor, embarrassed.-

 

They are quite small compared to us. Thankfully, they don't seem to mind conversational volume, or else find the easy meal enticing enough to be worth staying. [On that note, Onyx replenishes the meat pile Bianca's been snacking on.] But I've started typing now, I may as well keep all my notes in the same file.

 

-She nods, still flustered.-
