I realize I have some degree of hoarding issues, but JESUS CHRIST, roommate, why the hell are you throwing away something like $25 worth of yarn, much of it completely untouched? I fished three entire skeins out of the trash can, one with the damn label still on, and there were at least two more. o_O

Even without hoarding it because It Might Be Useful (guilty! I call it "poverty damage" and it's also why I squawk indignantly when people throw away FOOD THAT IS STILL GOOD. I don't care if you bought too much, it doesn't go into the trash unless it's inedible!), there are things you can do to get rid of it that ISN'T PUTTING IT IN THE TRASH WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU, NIGHTEYES'S ROOMATE. Give it away! Sell it! Donate it!

EXACTLY. Hell, give it to the cats to play with, even! They loved sleeping on the basket full of yarn when it was in the living room! (My family is relatively affluent but I still have some degree of poverty damage for reasons. But I'm pretty sure this would be kind of WTF even without it. What the hell, roommate.)

Yeah things are still WTF, I just get a full-on "cat sprayed with water" reaction to it because damage. Things people go "not cool bro" for I flail angrily about. :P

Other roommate commented on the look on my face when they told me, so I think my "WHAT THE HELL WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT JESUS CHRIST" reaction was probably very visible.

I slept too well night before last and couldn't sleep at all last night; finally fell asleep at 8:30 AM. Got to work at 3:30 PM; thankfully my job is good with that.

I need one (1) more class to graduate and it's not being offered as a night class, which means I need to change my work availability for three days a week rather than one.

eta: Also, I got this laptop specifically because it has a numeric keypad, and I get cranky every time I restart it and then discover that the keypad's disabled. I realize this is an exceptionally minor thing to get cranky about, but I need my diacritics, goshdarnit.

@budgie might be worth it to install a few extra keyboards? when I switched to a netbook (years ago), which is obviously too small for a numeric keypad, i installed extra keyboards ... now i have 5? *checks* 6. (i don't have a problem i swear) regular English, phonetic transcription, French-Canadian legacy, German standard, Italian standard, and Icelandic. i switch between them with ctrl-shift-1 through -5 (except phonetic transcription which is just ctrl-shift because i use it so often). i'm fluent in the English and French keyboards, and almost fluent in the German keyboard, but it's greatly increased my typing speed w/diacritics and all the other finicky bits (for instance, the French keyboard has the ° sign on a shift shortcut) which i usually had to go into character map and find, because i was hopeless at remembering anything beyond the basic accents in the numpad shortcuts.

ANYWAY this might not work for you for any one of a bunch of very good reasons, but i just wanted to make sure you were aware the option existed :)

@Kaylotta Hmmm, I didn't like the French keyboard just because having the ? in the wrong spot drove me crazy, but adding a phonetic transcription keyboard would be super useful, and I could retrain myself to learn the French keyboard. I'll give it a go!

@budgie i will be ENTIRELY honest and say that I still automatically switch back to the English keyboard to type a ?, even when I'm writing in French, because fuck having it up on the top bar. that's just dumb. (i could probably learn how to remap it...) there are some weird-ass punctuation things in the German and Italian keyboards too, so I usually end up switching back to English for punctuation. but i have the muscle memory now, so the inconvenience is minor. i suspect if i ever had to type novels or something in the other languages i'd bother to learn the punctuation keymapping. as it is, meh.

here's how i did the phonetic keyboard:
I use the Doulos SIL font for all my phonetics. SIL has a few other fonts, this is just my preferred one.
in order to use it functionally (instead of copy and pasting like i did for ... too long), i then installed this IPA MSKLC keyboard. i found the installation a little hard to follow intuitively, but the PDF readme included is excellent and includes a full keymap in two different layouts - also, the keymapping is fairly intuitive so far. I did set the IPA keyboard to be a separate English keyboard, rather than an Icelandic keyboard, because ... I actually type in Icelandic occasionally.

(oh hey I have a Czech keyboard installed too. just not on keyswitch. forgot about that.)

    good luck!!

we're doing this one again this year. i don't understand why when we could just sing each individual hymn and, in fact, we are singing each individual hymn in the sundays leading up to the christmas day sunday service.

Incidentally, the French AZERTY keyboard has the question mark on the bottom row.

So a few weeks ago I found out I have un-diagnosed ADD (the symptoms and life events listed for "high IQ sufferers of ADD" pretty much read like my biography, but everyone just thought me being spacey and unfocused was due to the Crippling Depression, so they focused on fixing that first). Anyway, I'm on Adderall now and it's been AMAZING. I have the ability to DO THINGS and not have to spend fifteen minutes psyching myself up beforehand, and I don't lose my place halfway through reading a page!

On the other hand, the Adderall has REALLY brought out the annoying verbal tic that I'd mostly suppressed until now. I'm having to consciously force myself not to make weird ass high-pitched hum/squeak noises and it's really frustrating.

Historical fiction that takes so many liberties with said history that it's no longer recognizable. >:(

(Specifically this one story I just ran across that was labeled as a "slash version of Dracula", which is fine, but instead of just going with the novel the author decided to bring the real-life Vlad Dracula into it and absolutely trample any shred of historical accuracy for no clear reason and it was just really bad. /special interest rage)

eta: Oh! I just realized how to properly classify this sort of thing. Good historical fiction knows the rules and how to break them well; bad historical fiction doesn't even know there are rules it's breaking. (Which there are. Because. It's history.)

Well, when it's Byron and Shelley having insane angel-fighting adventures, it's just like "oh, must be Tuesday"…

@palindromordnilap I wonder if that's true for the French Canadian keyboard too (since it's the one I have installed).
